Diana Riba i Giner (born February 21, 1975 in Barcelona ) is a Catalan educator , civil rights activist and politician ( ERC ). She won a mandate in the 2019 European elections and has been a member of the ninth European Parliament since then .

Life

education and profession

Diana Riba i Giner was born in Barcelona on February 21, 1975. After finishing school, she studied pedagogy at the University of Barcelona .

After completing her academic training, she began to work at the Center for Initiatives and Research Centers in the Mediterranean Foundation . She later moved to the La Caixa Foundation , for which she organized conferences on film and literature in the CaixaForum . She was also the program coordinator of the 2004 Forum of Cultures in Barcelona . In 2008 she started running a bookstore called Pati dels Llibres , located in Sant Cugat del Vallès , a municipality outside Barcelona. She ran the bookstore until 2019.

Political commitment

Riba is involved in various organizations, including a member of the Catalan Council for Children's and Youth Literature ( Consell Català del Llibre Infantil i Juvenil ) and the Catalan Association for Civil Rights ( Associació Catalana pels Drets ).

In December 2018, the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) nominated Riba for second place on the electoral list for the 2019 European elections, behind top candidate Oriol Junqueras . The ECR joined together with other left, smaller parties as a list connection Ahora República , they won 5.4 percent and thus 3 of the 59 Spanish seats. Diana Riba also won a mandate and has been a member of the ninth European Parliament since then . Like her colleague Junqueras in the previous legislature, she joined the Group of the Greens / EFA . She is a member of four committees for the group: the Committee on Foreign Affairs , the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs , the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the Subcommittee on Human Rights . She is also a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy , the Committee on Culture and Education and the Committee on Petitions .

Private

Diana Riba is married to Raül Romeva , a Catalan politician, former member of the European Parliament and former member of the Catalan regional government. After Catalonia's unilateral declaration of independence in October 2017 , he was deposed with the entire regional government, charged with rioting, embezzlement of public funds and disobedience, and placed in temporary detention because of the risk of fleeing.

The two have two children.
