Raches ( Greek Ράχες ( f. Pl. )) Is the westernmost municipality on the Greek island of Ikaria . It consists of the three local communities Raches, Agios Polykarpos and Karkinagri and emerged in 2010 from the community of the same name. With 101.7 km² it is the largest area and with about 2163 inhabitants the poorest district of Ikarias.
With the village of Christos as its center, the rural community (kinotita) Raches was recognized in 1918 and comprised seven villages on the northwest slope of the Atheras . A separate settlement with the name Raches in this municipality lost its status in 1920, at the same time the coastal town of Armenistis was incorporated. In 1981, some small towns were registered as settlements of the municipality, including the coastal settlement Nas as Kato Raches. In 1997, Raches was combined with the neighboring communities of Agios Polykarpos and Karkinagri to form the municipality of Raches ( Dimos Rachon Δήμος Ραχών). With the administrative reform in 2010 , this municipality was integrated into the newly created municipality of Ikaria, which encompasses the entire island and has since formed one of three municipal districts in it.
location
The area is located in the west of Ikaria and rises steeply from the south coast to an altitude of over 900 m and reaches its highest point northeast of Karkinagri with the Provatokefalas (Προβατοκεφάλας, 1011 m), 4 km from the south coast. From here the terrain initially falls fairly flat, later a little more sharply to the northwest towards the sea. Several year-round water-bearing streams (Chalaris, Charakas and Mirsonas) drain to the north coast, which is why reservoirs were created on the upper reaches of Chalaris and Mirsonas.
The nearest island, Mykonos, is 45 km away in the west, and Chios in the north is around 70 km away.
structure
The municipality is divided into three local communities with numerous small, scattered settlements. The population figures are from the 2011 census.
