The Radetzky monument in front of the government building at Stubenring 1 in the Austrian capital Vienna is an equestrian statue from 1892 and dedicated to the probably most important military leader of the Austrian Empire , Field Marshal Josef Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz .

history

After a call to erect a Radetzky memorial in 1859 as a result of the Sardinian War was unsuccessful, another call was made on June 27, 1886. Among other things, it said:

“After the death of the unforgettable Field Marshal Count Radetzky on January 5, 1858, the general desire soon became noticeable to this glorious general, who during seventy-two years of service under five monarchs participated in nineteen campaigns, the true father of his soldiers, the true father of his soldiers through dynastic loyalty and true Patriots shining light on patriotism, to erect a worthy monument in Vienna .... Radetzky's monument should one day remind our descendants of what an eighty-two-year-old military leader was able to achieve ... "

In the same year, following an appeal to the most important monumental sculptor of the Vienna Ringstrasse era ( Beethoven monument , Maria Theresa monument , equestrian statue Archduke Albrecht ), Caspar von Zumbusch was given the order by a committee with the chairman Archduke Albrecht "on a short way" (without competition) granted to erect a Radetzky monument.

21 locations were up for discussion for the list. Among other things, in front of the Palace of Justice (today's Schmerlingplatz) and in front of the Votive Church . Ultimately, it was erected at Am Hof in front of number 2, the then building of the Reich Ministry of War , and unveiled on April 24, 1892.

In 1912 the memorial was moved to its present location in front of the newly established War Ministry on Stubenring and unveiled on July 27, 1912.

description

The base with the red marble was made according to the plans of the architect George Niemann .

The equestrian statue that Caspar von Zumbusch created between 1886 and 1892 depicts Radetzky on horseback - standing on the battlefield, surveying and directing the fight.

The reliefs on the left and right on the base are works by Hans Bitterlich . The left represents Radetzky at the war council with his generals Heinrich von Heß , Karl von Schönhals , Konstantin d'Aspre , Eugen Wratislaw von Mitrowitz and Georg von Thurn and Valsassina , and the right represents Radetzky, as he is cheered by soldiers of all branches and nations. At the front of the base is a bronze double-headed eagle and above it a plaque with the famous words of Franz Grillparzer : "In your camp is Austria". These come from a poem of praise that Grillparzer wrote to Radetzky in 1848.

Others

There was also a monumental Radetzky monument in Prague . It was unveiled in 1858 and was located on Lesser Town Square in the historic city center. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia , the monument was dismantled (1918/19).
