Radio Maria Austria is a predominantly Catholic radio broadcaster in Austria. The carrier is the association Radio Maria Austria - the transmitter with broadcast based in Vienna. Financing comes from donations. It belongs to the worldwide network of broadcasters World Family of Radio Maria , recognized by the Catholic Church , which also includes Radio Maria (Italy) - founding member (1982/1983) -, Radio Horeb in Germany and around 50 other stations worldwide. The operator is the United Apostolate in the Spirit of Mary.

program

Radio Maria broadcasts a missionary-oriented Roman Catholic program for Austria. It started broadcasting with the first VHF transmitter on the Sonntagberg basilica in the Mostviertel of Lower Austria. According to its own statement, the aim of the station is to depict the “diverse life of the Church and the people in our country” (Austria). According to the chairman Lukas Bonelli, the station's concerns are evangelization and the spread of the faith . The Broadcasting and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (RTR) approved "an ad free, religious 24-division program of Christian inspiration ... to people of all ages and professions that deal with the present and orientation issues." The program consists of about 70 percent Word portion and includes religious, cultural and social content with a local reference. The music component is predominantly classical and sacred. In addition to the radio program, there is also a monthly program booklet for postal purchases.

There are radio studios in Vienna , Amstetten , Innsbruck and Salzburg .

Program director and responsible under Austrian press law is Andreas Schätzle .

Since October 1, 2010, rmxpect, a web radio geared towards young listeners, has been available . The program was discontinued around mid-2018.

reception

Radio Maria's program can be received over eight VHF frequencies as well as nationwide via cable connection . There is also a satellite frequency via Astra and a worldwide radio stream on the Internet.

The station has received a slot for an initially 10-year digital broadcasting operation via DVB-T in the greater Vienna area, where the program has been receivable since January 28, 2010 with initially reduced power (10 kW). In the meantime, the transmission area with 80 kW ( "Mux B", Kahlenberg ) has been extended to the entire Archdiocese of Vienna and northern Burgenland. The broadcaster's claim to be the first DVB-T radio broadcaster in Austria is controversial, as there has been DVB-T broadcasting of radio programs in Styria since December 22, 2009. However, Radio Maria is currently the only DVB-T radio broadcaster in the Vienna region. In October 2014, a broadcast slot was added via the nationwide “Mux F” ( DVB-T2 via simpliTV ), where the station is part of the unencrypted program offer.

In September 2014, it became known that the broadcaster would be awarded the contract for the smallest VHF frequency in Vienna - measured in terms of transmission power - with which, however, only 70,000 residents in the Inner City district of Vienna can be reached. In support of this, the media authority KommAustria stated that the broadcaster's application showed a “greater contribution to diversity of opinion” compared to three competitors ( Mein Kinderradio and two new program providers in Vienna).

Since May 28, 2019, Radio Maria Austria has been broadcast nationwide via DAB + in the Bundesmux 5B.
