The cycling track was officially opened in the design that can still be found today on May 26, 1957. This is the third design of a cycling track at this location, which originated in 1934. A 400 m long earth track was built on the area, which at that time was still a Schützenplatz. At the turn of the century, Gera was one of the richest cities in Germany, which had brought great prosperity to the textile industry, which lasted until the war; Here cycling enjoyed increasing popularity and the area in Debschwitz is said to have counted a record with around 22,000 spectators. Shortly before the end of the Second World War , the railway was destroyed by the Wehrmacht . This drove six bunkers into the curves.

With the second construction after the war, from 1946/47, in the Soviet occupation zone , the work began thanks to the initiative of the citizens, financed by construction vouchers from Gera companies and a construction lottery. Then the construction of a 250 m long cycle track with a width of 6 m on a slag layer began . After great efforts, the ash track was inaugurated on October 1st, 1950. Cyclists had to wait almost seven years for the hoped-for concrete pavement, the scarce Rochstoff in construction Germany, until the third and current form of the cycling track appeared.

The investment had paid off for Gera, because with the planning for top-class sport in the GDR , the district capital , which now flourished again as such, officially became a competitive center in cycling and boxing with the establishment of the SG Wismut Gera .

There have been repeated investments in the cycling track. Extensive reconstruction work was carried out in 1978/79, such as draining the traverses and spreading the inner edge of the railway. Cavities under the membrane were filled and the concrete surface was finally sandblasted and an epoxy resin surface was applied. Ancillary and functional buildings followed with indoor training rooms and an entrance portal under waving flags, the masts of which are still standing today.

The cycling track lasted until the fall of 1990. From the SG Wismut Gera, the Stadtsportverein Gera 1990 eV emerged for the field of cycling . He is based on this traditional sports facility.

The new millennium inspired the city of Gera, the cycling facility, which the ravages of time was now visibly gnawing, to develop a concept to create the fourth version of a cycling track. An oval with a roof. In the absence of funding, nothing came of it.

However, a modern new building has now been added to the old functional building, which includes the strength and athletic area. Up until then, this complex had been housed in the outskirts of Vollersdorfer Strasse, but was lost there in the floods in June 2013 .

successes

In more than four generations of cyclists, the cycling facility has produced many national and international successful cyclists who pedaled in this oval. Athletes like Lothar Meister II , Jürgen Simon , Erhard Hancke , Volker Schönfeld to Gerald Mortag , Lutz Haueisen , Olaf Ludwig , Thomas Barth , Jörg Köhler to Sebastian Siedler , Michael Seidenbecher , Marcel Barth , René Enders and Robert Förstemann .

The heyday of the cycling track was that of the GDR with numerous national and international events, the GDR Grand Prix, several German championships and country comparisons. In 1956, Omar Pchakadze from the Soviet Union set the track record over 200 m with 12.0 seconds. In 1958 around 15,000 spectators saw the country comparison competition between the GDR and Hungary. It was June 25, 1968 when Klaus Großmann set the track record of 30: 23.8 minutes at the GDR Grand Prix in the standing race after 120 laps in the oval.

The German Youth Championships took place from July 17 to 20, 2003, and the city of Gera's international standing and sprinter prizes in 2012 and 2013.

Such audience numbers as at the time of the GDR competitive sport could no longer be achieved. But cycling has stayed in the hearts of the people in the former Gera district . Today, the concrete oval at the city forest is mainly used for the next generation of cyclists with the Gera Junior Track Cup competition series and the nationwide unique viewing event at the Gera cycling day for the Olaf Ludwig Cup and serves as the starting point for the East Thuringia tour .
