Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is a tactical shooter developed by CI Games for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and released worldwide on April 25, 2017. It is a sequel to Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 , and the first game in the series to offer an open world environment.

Gameplay

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is a first-person tactical shooter game. It is designed less linearly than Ghost Warrior and Ghost Warrior 2 , as the title is the first in the series to offer an open-world environment that can be freely explored by the player. The world of the game is littered with various activities and side missions known as "war crimes". These can be completed by the player apart from the main missions. According to CI Games, the title should be accessible to either player new to the franchise or genre, while being tactical enough for hardcore gamers.

The game is based on three different pillars: aim, execute and survive. The player can use different approaches to complete missions and defeat opponents as the map is now bigger and more open. For example, the player can use stealth and close combat to kill enemies in " gun and run " style, or use the weapons or gadgets provided, such as sniper rifles , to hit enemies from a great distance.

The objectives of the game are not displayed on the minimap provided to the player. The player must find them by completing missions to collect information. The player can also use a drone , which is one of the newest additions to the series and can be controlled by the player to scan and monitor the area and to track down enemies. The drone can also be used to hack into enemy's electronic equipment and weapons, creating distractions. However, there is a risk when the player uses the drone as enemies can be alerted if they spot the drone. Since one of the core experiences of the game is sniper shooting, the accuracy of long range shots is affected by several factors, such as: B. the calibration of the riflescope , the weather, the wind speed, the distance, the force of gravity and the breathing strength and speed of the protagonist. As a result, the player must plan, adjust, and respond to the gaming environment in order to change these factors.

Navigation has been improved in Ghost Warrior 3 . According to the game's developer, the player can perform some "extreme navigation" movements, such as: B. freewheeling, parkouring , rock climbing and abseiling. The player can activate the scout mode, which allows the protagonist of the game to highlight places of interest and detect explosives such as mines . The player can also use the mode to find a new sniper spot during operations. The game also focuses on realism; therefore it also has a dynamic weather system and a day-night cycle that affects the gameplay and the behavior of the opponent. The player can take advantage of these situations to gain tactical advantages.

In addition, the player can travel to the "Safe House", where he can collect supplies and resources such as first aid kits and ammunition for weapons. These safe accommodations also serve the player as quick travel points for easy navigation through the world. In addition, the player can make and modify his weapons and bullets. These upgrades can improve the efficiency and accuracy of the weapons. When the player is not playing missions, they can interact with a neutral faction that may or may not help them complete missions. The safe hiding place is a safe place where the player can choose items of equipment, sleep up to a certain hour, do handicrafts, buy items in the store and start missions. There are several safe shelters on each map and the player must discover them in order to use them. There will be loot waiting or new weapons to equip in newly discovered hiding places. The player can quickly travel to a safe shelter from anywhere in the world (after entering an operational area, fast travel is deactivated).

After selecting a mission, its area is displayed on the map and a GPS path is displayed. Various sights that the player has previously discovered are also marked on the map. The way to the mission area leads through open maps on which the player can encounter random events, sights, hunting animals, etc. Which route the player chooses is up to him.

The player has his own car to explore. It will be there whenever you leave a safe haven or travel to previously discovered fast travel points. The player can use it to quickly get over map areas. Opponents can also recognize the player in the vehicle, so you should still be careful.

action

The player takes on the role of US Marine Jonathan "Jon" North, who is sent to the Russian-Ukrainian border with his brother Robert to destroy an abandoned stash of bio-weapons from the Soviet era before they are stolen by terrorists can. The two successfully completed their mission but are ambushed by an unknown group of soldiers from a special forces unit led by a man named Vasilisk, who plays Russian roulette with Jon before knocking him out and taking Robert prisoner.

Two years later, Jon is sent to Georgia to destabilize the local Georgian separatist cells, which are reported to have received unusually large funds and resources. Jon accepted the assignment with the ulterior motive of locating his brother Robert after hearing rumors that he was in the area. He is supported by his JSOC employee Frank Simms, an ex-Georgian special forces sniper named Lydia, with whom he used to have a romantic relationship, and the Israeli Mossad agent Raquel, who is in the region, to help a Russian scientist named Sergei Catch and recruit Flostov who she believes is being held by the separatists.

The separatists are led by the twins , Davit and Tomas, and a woman named Inna, who is supposed to marry Tomas. Jon infiltrates the wedding in hopes of gathering information that will help him later murder Tomas, but the wedding is interrupted when Tomas' bodyguard slams him down at the altar before being killed by an invisible sniper himself . Continuing other missions against the separatists, Jon learns that the events in Georgia are being manipulated by an international conspiracy called "The 23 Society," whose armed forces are armed with high-tech experimental weapons and led by a mysterious soldier with seemingly superhuman abilities, the known as Armazi.

In the wake of the separatists' destabilization, Jon is sent to kill a local crime boss who does business with the separatists who is Vasilisk, who turns out to be a member of the 23 Society. When confronted with Jon, Vasilisk plays another game of Russian roulette with him, which ends with Vasilisk shooting himself in the head before Jon can interrogate him.

Jon is eventually confronted with Armazi himself, who turns out to be Robert, who has undergone drug therapy, genetic engineering, and brainwashing to turn him into a super soldier loyal to the 23 Society. Robert demonstrates his superhuman skills to Jon before unsuccessfully attempting to recruit him to the 23 Society.

Jon later receives information that scientist Sergei Flostov is being held in a separatist facility. Jon rescues Flostov, who claims he was forced by the 23 Society to help them create brainwashed, genetically modified super soldiers. Flostov informs Jon that the 23 Society recently captured an American soldier and will soon execute him for not being brainwashed. Jon travels to the location where the captured soldier is being held and discovers that it is Cole Anderson, the protagonist of the previous game. Cole, defeated in battle by Armazi and later mutilated by him beyond the point of recovery, reveals to Jon that Flostov is indeed the leader of the 23 Society and asks Jon to leave his gun behind so he can end his own life and be in Would die for what he does when Jon goes to chase Flostov. Flostov contacts Jon over the radio and is delighted to see how the 23 Society killed Robert's wife Milla and then used her death to break his mind and brainwash him.

Jon rescues one of the Separatist leaders, Inna, from an attack by 23 Society super soldiers, and learns from her that the other remaining Separatist leader, Davit, is allied with the 23 Society and is responsible for the murder of her fiancé Tomas. Jon kills Davit and Inna in return tells him where to find Flostov and Robert / Armazi, who are in an old uranium mine where Flostov set up a nuclear reactor to make yellowcake uranium for making nuclear weapons . When Jon infiltrates the mine and fights with mercenaries and super soldiers from the 23 Society, the nuclear reactor becomes unstable. Jon confronts Flostov and Robert at the reactor and reveals to Robert that Flostov and the 23 Society killed his wife, Milla. He stages her death to make it look like she was killed in an American drone attack aimed at turning it against his country. After learning how he was brainwashed and tampered with, Robert kills Flostov and then locks himself in the reactor room to manually stop the meltdown so Jon has time to escape, dying of radiation poisoning. Jon exfiltrates in a helicopter at Lydia and Raquel's side and swears vengeance on the remaining members of the 23 Society.

development

The game was developed by CI Games, which also developed the game's predecessor. While the previous games weren't a critical success, the company viewed the series as a commercial success. The franchise's first two games sold combined over 5.5 million times.

The game was announced on December 16, 2014 and was recognized by CI Games as "the best sniper experience for PC and next-gen consoles". The first gameplay footage of the game was shown during E3 2015, while the first gameplay was uploaded to CI Games' YouTube channel on July 22, 2015 .

The game was scheduled for the first half of 2016 but was delayed due to ambitious plans (i.e. open world) and feedback from the beta phase of the game.

The game's budget and scope have expanded significantly and are larger than its predecessors, and the title is the first entry in the series to have an AAA production scale . The game's creative director is Paul B. Robinson, a military veteran who also has a 20 year career in game development. The lead narrative designer is Jess Lebow, who has worked on franchises such as League of Legends , Guild Wars, and Far Cry . According to CI Games, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 laid the foundation for the game's development.

Receptions

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 received "mixed or average" reviews , according to the review aggregator Metacritic .

The game's open world was praised by Gaming Trend: "Beautiful open world landscapes in former Soviet Georgia" and CD Action ("well-designed open world").

JeuxActu writes that a good open world was not achieved for budget reasons. "Civilian bags do their best to give the illusion of a living, breathing society, but their perplexed responses to a burly Marine storming their homes are far from believable," writes Gamespot's Richard Wakeling.

IGN's Caley Roark wondered why nothing about this game felt "novel or unique". Then Caley realized that the game was making a comeback to linear action games, which he enjoyed on the original Xbox, even when disguised in open-world clothing.

Caley writes: "Diversity prevents these narrow missions from repeating themselves". He thinks the AI is largely competent, it "offered a reasonable challenge," but has not cheated by finding him for no reason.

However, Caley Roark didn't like the graphics of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, calling character models and textures "cartoonish". In the end, he gave the game a "mediocre" rating of 5.5.

Playstation Universe gives a score of 7 and writes: "This latest episode is the best the series has seen so far, even if it seems like poor praise to some" and "Sniper Ghost Warrior 3's narrative draws generously from the pantheon of the cheesy sniper and scout films that have come and gone over the past twenty years ".

Gamespot's Richard Wakeling also attributes the plot to B-movies: "Even the predictable, mundane story is reminiscent of the kind of gritty B-movies Steven Seagal is known for."

Richard Wakeling gave the game a "mediocre" rating of 5 and gave the article headline "missed the mark". Wakeling agrees that the open world and the associated increase in the size and flexibility of the game was a good idea, but still claims that the game "is often disrupted by a myriad of bugs," such as: B. the barreness of the open world and the multitude of technical and graphic performance deficiencies. He claims that "Sniping is the winning card in his [Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3] deck, but CI Games regularly plays other hands to the detriment of the game".

Ray Porreca of Destructoid gave the game a "bad" rating of 3. Porreca calls the game boring; a "boring open-world shooter that is combined with immature game systems and incongruent narrative". Porreca criticizes the open world situation of the game and describes it as "impairing the game". However, the Eurogamer reviewer wrote: "During the core loop of infiltration, sniping and exfiltration - the open world shines".

Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw placed the game at number 1 on his list of the five worst games of 2017.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 sold over 1 million copies of the game on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in the first 10 months. CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski said the title had a relatively successful result despite mediocre media coverage. The game made a significant contribution to CI Games' € 24 million profit in the 2017 financial year.
