Sniper: Ghost Warrior (also S: GW ) is a stealth shooter developed and publishedby City Interactive with a focus on sniper themes and the successor to Sniper: Art of Victory . It was released for Windows , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 , which was released on June 24, 2010 for Windows via Steam . The Xbox 360 version was released a few days later on June 29, 2010 in the USA, while the version for the PlayStation 3 was released much later, on April 28, 2011.

The successor is the 2013 Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 . The third part was released on April 25, 2017 and was previously presented at Gamescom .

    Game character

With Sniper: Ghost Warrior, City Interactive has once again taken up the concept of focusing the game plot almost exclusively on the game character of a sniper . As with Sniper: Art of Victory - the unofficial predecessor - the publisher is once again highlighting the unique selling point of this subgenre. Due to its unusual approach, Sniper: Ghost Warrior is still an exception in 2010 compared to 'conventional' first-person shooters , in which, as is typical of the genre, the player usually plays a regular soldier with automatic weapons.

Lisa Rivera, Vice President of the Sales Department at City Interactive recently made it clear that the increasingly frequent broadcasts, for example on the history channel or channels where there are more military documentaries, have in the past increased the number of people interested in games of this type consists.

    action

In S: GW players take as part of a special unit of the Marines in various roles of military elite units , which are sent to the most remote places in the world to perform dicey missions behind enemy lines. He takes on the role of three characters in the game for different missions each. In the course of the plot, with Sergeant Tyler Wells as the main character, the player is an elite sniper and specialist in assignments with covert and camouflaged operations under remote control. Here, as a precision shooter, he has to train a group of rebels in Isla Trueno , a fictional Latin American state whose democratic government was overthrown by enemy forces with a coup d'État , and support them in resisting and fighting back against the putschists in various sniper and close combat missions ultimately to liquidate their leader General Vasquez . He also plays the protagonist Private Anderson as a Delta Force operator of a Delta Force attack team, as well as a Mexican rebel named El Trejon - in missions where the player is directly involved in direct combat and firefights .

    content

    Game mechanics

The game is set in an alternative present or the near future, in which in South America there are armed conflicts between ultranationalist military forces that have overthrown the government and rebels. The scenes range from predominantly jungle-like areas to inner-city missions and mountainous areas to factory sites and drilling platforms.

The title here deals in particular with the deployment scenarios of snipers as well as their subject matter and combat mission . Techniques are used that ensure the behavior of projectiles or their flight curve in the event of external influences and their consequences as authentically and as realistically as possible and ultimately reproduce them.

    Realistic ballistic system

It offers a realistic ballistic system, whereby the greatest possible number of possible (environmental) influences such as wind, fog, rain, the Coriolis force and weight is taken into account. This enables the realistic reproduction of effects, whereas even the breathing of the game character and the air speed here have an effect on the parabola of the projectiles. If the protagonist has previously covered distances in a sprint, the pulse increases significantly and makes aiming or firing a shot and actually acting on the previously aimed target practically impossible. Although the player can hold their breath , the time is shortened considerably if the character is currently restless . The player is therefore forced to control his breathing in a certain way by tactical means, for example by running as little as possible in order to always be able to fire an aimed shot.

    Bullet cam mode

One of the special features of the game, which was also used in the predecessor S: AoV and similar games such as Snipers Elite , is the visualization of the exact trajectory in the immediate vicinity of the projectile. Here one will cutscene shown during an in camera movement , the fired projectile of abrupt deceleration in slow motion is tracked.

    Tactical action

Sniper: Ghost Warrior makes comparatively high demands on tactical behavior. A procedure like in standard shooters like rushing must almost inevitably lead to failure in S: GW . You play a covert sniper who moves silently into enemy territory to take down high-quality and high-grade targets.

Here, the player's approach to camouflage and tactics is particularly important, as even the smallest mistake by the sniper reveals his cover and the mission fails. The player has to pay close attention to targeted shots and quiet 'switching off' . A large number of all missions take place in jungle-like areas and the protagonist wears a ghillie suit , but even in the jungle there are often situations where a large hallway makes it all too easy to discover quickly.

The player can also use his equipment tactically to provoke secondary scenes in order to distract the opponent. These include, for example, Claymore mines or C4 explosive devices or the triggering of explosions by bombarding distant explosive objects.

    Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode of S: GW allows players to play either online - after prior registration - or in the local network (LAN) with up to twelve players in three different modes on six maps . The online mode requires a one-time free registration with an e-mail address.

The game modes are Deathmatch , Team Deathmatch and VIP , with Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch being the usual modes of other games. The VIP mode is a slight variation on the King-of-the-Hill mode, in which the King receives additional bonus points for killing other opposition players. Opposing players receive bonus points for eliminating the leader of the opposing team - if a player reaches more bonus points than the king , he takes his place.

    technology

    Chrome 4 engine logo

S: GW relies on version 4.0 of the Chrome engine from the Polish developer Techland . In addition to the usual common standards, it supports dynamic lighting, 64-bit high dynamic range (HDR) rendering, dynamic, soft shadows and depth of field. In addition, it also offers motion blur and a built-in physics engine for destructible environments, as well as multi-channel, surround sound and streaming support. The penetration behavior of bullets is also calculated by the engine, taking into account the hardness and strength of the material, which is why wooden and thin walls offer insufficient cover. Certain objects such as vehicles and barrels are destructible and can become dangerous themselves if they explode. According to the developers, Chrome is a true " What You See Is What You Get " engine and allows substantial control over the process of level and game development.

    distribution

    publication

On March 26, 2010, the website went online with the first comprehensive information on the game. The first trailers with game scenes appeared in April. The Windows and XBox versions were released on June 24th in Europe and on June 29th, 2010 in the USA by the sales platform Steam . In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the title appeared in an uncut or unchanged (uncut) version and received no youth approval from the USK according to § 14 JuSchG (approved from 18 years). The PlayStation 3 variant was only released almost a year later, on April 28 for Europe and on June 28, 2011 in the United States.

City Interactive reported on the game's website on February 16, 2011 that the game had sold over 1 million copies worldwide in seven months.

On May 11, 2011, the publisher announced a sequel to S: GW for the first quarter of 2012. The successor Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 - so the title - for the previous platforms PC, XBox 360 and Playstation 3. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 should already be in development and be based on the CryEngine 3 from Crytek , according to Michal Sroczynski , Chief Producer of City Interactive.

During E3 2011 in Los Angeles, California City Interactive announced that it would be presenting a first playable pre-release version of S: GW 2 from June 7th to 9th . So the City Interactive team finally gave first insights into some details of the successor. S: GW 2 will therefore have a cooperative multiplayer mode for up to two participants. So snipers and scouts have to work closely together to achieve their goals as a team. There will also be a kind of “playbook” that contains cooperative maneuvers. In the single player you slip into the role of the US Marine Captain Cody Anderson and fight as him in environments that, according to the developers, are based exclusively on scenes from the real world.

The Polish team from City Interactive was also represented at GamesCom in Cologne in August 2011 and presented its latest development to the public with a playable version of S: GW 2 .

    Demo version

On June 17, 2010, at the same time as E3, City Interactive published a demo version of S: GW for the PC. It consists of two missions, one of which has already been covered in one of the previously published videos. However, many players had to find out in retrospect that the demo contains a runtime limit and that this refuses to start when the regular title is released. However, you can work around this limitation by setting the computer date to a date from June 17, 2010 to June 24, 2010.

    Downloadable content

A previously announced DLC for Windows and XBox was released on September 8, 2010 and contains five other considerably larger maps which, due to their size, could offer longer shooting distances. The DLC is available at a price of around ten euros on Steam or 1200 MS points in the Xbox Live Marketplace.

    Trivia

The game includes a now rare quick save function . The loading times of the maps are also noticeably short by today's standards.

Various mods are available for Sniper: Ghost Warrior through the community . These are integrated into the game with the JSGME. At the moment there are modifications that integrate night and rain cards into the game or make it possible to manipulate displays such as the HUD or skins .

Sniper: Ghost Warrior received moderate to negative criticism from the press. The game was praised in many places for its fascinating visual effects and the general implementation of such a niche topic, but wascriticizedabove all for the sometimes bugged and chaotic content - here in the first place the AI and the action elements.

    Reviews

On Metacritic , the PC version achieved a rating of 55%, the PS3 reached 45%, the Xbox 360 version only got 45%. GameStar awarded 72% for the PC version, at 4Players the Playstation version got 65 while the PC version only got 63 points - the XBox port got 62 points. PC Games came to a rating of 62% fun.

“The moments when I sneak silently through the thicket and shoot out one enemy after the other with my precision rifle have tied me to the monitor, for example. It is annoying that City Interactive too often moves away from this exciting basic concept and tries to bring variety into the sniper's life through (uninspired) action elements. That wouldn't have been necessary and it takes a lot of the game's abundant potential. "

    - Daniel Matschijewsky : GameStar.de

IGN awarded a 5.0, while it praised the sniper theme and game mechanics, but criticized the loveless implementation and the run-and-gun scenarios with disappointment . GameSpot gave the game a rating of 5.5 in order not to go unmentioned that the title offers excellent visual effects and satisfying sniper cams and criticized the absurd difficulty in some parts - especially where the enemy AI "ranged from senseless to so magical that they discover you instantly ". GameZone gave the game a "4.5 out of 10" to mention that "the single player campaign is a decent length and there is also multiplayer (if you can find someone to play with). Unfortunately, Sniper: Ghost Warrior is a" Well "low-stimulus experience, although those with extreme patience and a passion for sniper rifles will certainly have fun." G4's X-Play gave the game two out of five and found the gameplay concept interesting. However, the AI is either limited or very clever, and the game has a number of glitches .
