Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio

Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio (born December 4, 1927 in Rome , † April 1, 2019 in Madrid ) was a Spanish writer .

Life

In the 1950s, Sánchez Ferlosio became known across the Spanish borders. His first novel was in 1951 Industrias y andanzas de Alfanhuí . This book was published in German in 1959 under the title Adventure and Hikes of the Alfanhuí and earned him recognition from the professional world. With El Jarama , his second novel from 1955, he became world famous. For this novel, which appeared in German in 1960 under the title Am Jarama , Ferlosio received the prestigious Nadal literary prize . Mainly he wrote essays, short stories, poems and newspaper columns, most of which appeared in El País .

Sánchez Ferlosio was married to the writer Carmen Martín Gaite until 1970 , with whom he had a son, who died as an infant, and a 19-year-old daughter. After her death in 1985, he largely withdrew and last worked in Madrid. Until his death, Demetria Chamorro lived with his second wife, whose daughter he adopted and had a granddaughter.

In 2003, he made headlines again when he publicly condemned the invasion of Iraq by US-led forces in harsh words. Surprisingly, Sánchez Ferlosio was awarded the Cervantes Prize in December 2004 . Before the election, Sánchez Ferlosio was not one of the favorites.
