Rafael Squirru

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rafael Squirru (born March 23, 1925 in Buenos Aires ; † March 5, 2016 ibid) was an Argentine poet, speaker, art critic and essayist .

Life

Squirru was born in Buenos Aires in 1925 and grew up there. He attended Saint Andrew's Scot School and the El Salvador Secondary School of the Jesuits . He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1948 .

After founding the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires in 1956, he entered the government of Arturo Frondizi as director of cultural affairs for Argentine and Latin American art. Through his efforts during this time, sculptures by Alicia Penalba and etchings by Antonie Berni were sent to São Paulo and the Biennale di Venezia , respectively, with both artists receiving first prizes.

As director of culture for the Organization of American States (OAS), headquartered in Washington, DC , he continued his job of promoting North and Latin American culture in 1963 until his resignation in 1970. During this time he supported the construction of the tomb for US President John F. Kennedy by the Uruguayan artist Lincoln Presno in Quemú Quemú; his inaugural address as the official representative of the OAS, given during the military rule of General Juan Carlos Onganía , earned him a temporary declaration on persona non grata .

Back in Buenos Aires, he supported culture in all its forms through readings in his own country and abroad, forewords to art exhibitions and regular publications in the Argentine daily La Nación , with which he worked for more than twenty years.
