Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (born June 6, 1946 in Shahpur , Bihar , † September 13, 2020 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician ( RJD ).

Life

Singh comes from Shahpur in the Vaishali district in Bihar. He had a degree in mathematics and worked as a math teacher at a college in Sitamarhi . He initially belonged to the Samyukta Socialist Party , later to Janata Dal , founded in 1988 , and to RJD, founded in 1997 as a spin-off from Janata Dal. From 1977 to 1979 he was State Secretary for Energy in the government of Karpoori Thakur in Bihar State . From 1980 to 1990 he was a member of the Parliament of Bihar State.

In 1996 he was first elected to the First Chamber of Parliament at federal level ( Lok Sabha ), which he was a member until 2014. From 1996 he was State Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Production, then from 1997 to 1998 State Secretary for Food and Consumer Affairs.

From 2004 to 2009 he was Federal Minister for Rural Development in the government of Manmohan Singh . Under his leadership, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) came about.

He died of COVID-19 infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi at the age of 74 .
