1 Albanian (indefinite / definite form) , 2 Serbian (Latin / Cyrillic spelling) 3 Kosovo's independence is controversial. Serbia continues to regard the country as a Serbian province. |
Rahovec ( Albanian also Rahoveci , Serbian Ораховац Orahovac ) is a city in Kosovo , about 20 kilometers east of the city of Gjakova and 30 kilometers north of the city of Prizren . The city has around 16,000 inhabitants; the Rahovec municipality , which includes 35 villages in addition to the Rahovec town, has about 56,200 inhabitants.
In the larger community, the Albanians make up the majority and the Serbs, along with other groups, the largest minority. In Rahovec they live in the northern, higher part of the city and in Velika Hoča , a nearby village. A few kilometers outside is the Serbian Orthodox monastery of the healers St. Cosmas and Damian from the 13th century. Other minorities are the Roma as well as the Ashkali or "Egyptians", together with the Serbs they make up almost 2% of the total population of Rahovec.
The main economic basis of the city is viticulture and plastic production.
Linguistic peculiarity of the place is its Serbian dialect, Oravački , which is common to all national groups.
The German organization Schüler Helfen Leben has been active in the town since 2001 and operates a youth center there with two parts, one in the Serbian and one in the Albanian part of the city. The German organization AMICA eV has been working in the city since 2000 and offers project centers for women and girls as well as groups for children with disabilities.
history
There was already a settlement on the site of today's Rahovec in ancient times. This is evidenced by several different excavations (including coins, large vessels, spearheads and more) that were found during the 1950s as part of urban development measures.
The present place is mentioned for the first time in 1348 as Rahovc .
