Velika Hoča ( Serbian - Cyrillic Велика Хоча , Albanian  Hoça e Madhe or Hoçë e Madhe ) is a village in the Rahovec municipality in Kosovo .

geography

Velika Hoča is located five kilometers from Rahovec . The village can be reached via the R204 (Krusha e Madhe - Rahovec) and R-117 . To the south are the villages of Brestoc and Hoça e Vogël .

history

The many old Serbian Orthodox churches , some of which date from the 12th century, should be emphasized . The frescoes are well preserved. The village is guarded around the clock by KFOR to protect the Serb minority from Kosovar-Albanian attacks. At Easter 2007, the writer Peter Handke visited the village and presented Mayor Dejan Baljoševic with the 50,000 euros in prize money, which was endowed with the Berlin Heinrich Heine Prize awarded to Handke . Handke processed the experiences during this trip in his book The Cuckoo by Velika Hoča , published in 2009 .

population

The 2011 census recorded 124 inhabitants for Velika Hoča, of which 75 described themselves as Albanians (60.48%) and 49 as Serbs . However, part of the Serbs and Roma in Kosovo boycotted this census. Current estimates assume a population of between 500 and 700 for Velika Hoča.

In 1991, 1186 Serbs were recorded with a population of 1233 or 1288 (continued; the 1991 census was almost entirely boycotted by Albanians).

religion

In 2011, 75 of the 124 inhabitants professed Islam and 49 as Serbian Orthodox .

politics

In 2012, the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo passed a law regulating the status of the village of Velika Hoča. The law gives the village a certain degree of autonomy , particularly in relation to the management of its cultural heritage. This also envisages the village council as a permanent institution.
