The Балтийск ( Baltiysk ) , formerly Railship II , is a railway ferry that was used by the Railship Group until 1998 on the Travemünde - Hanko (Finland) route and from 1998 to 2005 on the Travemünde - Turku route.

When building the Railship II , the shipyard used the draft of the Railship I because this ship had proven itself very well. Thanks to the hydrodynamic development of the hull shape and weight savings, the same speed was achieved as with the smaller predecessor ship.

Machine system

The machinery consisted of two main motors with 8000 kW each, each of which drove a variable pitch propeller via a gearbox. A shaft generator with an output of 1000 kW was also attached to each gearbox . In addition, two diesel generators with 1000 kW each and a port diesel with 176 kW were installed. There are two transverse thrusters in the bow. The machinery, with the exception of the port diesel, was designed for operation with heavy fuel oil.

Loading decks

Five tracks were sunk into the ground on each of the three loading decks. On the lower deck 458 meters, on the middle deck 777 meters and on the upper 741 meters standard gauge . With the help of a swivel platform in the front loading area and the six on-board shunting locomotives, the wagons could be moved. Loading took place via the middle deck. From there, the wagons were distributed to the individual decks with a 92-tonne double-decker lift. A total of 95 wagons could be loaded. The loading decks are all built closed and can be accessed via the rear door that swings upwards. The gauge was changed to the Finnish broad gauge in Hanko, and from 1998 in Turku. On the open upper deck, passenger cars for export could be loaded with two special davits . The davits at the height of the chimney were designed for a load of two tons.

Whereabouts

In September 2002 the ship was renamed Finnrider , on March 24th 2004 Rider . It was used in Finland traffic until 2005 and was sold to the Russian shipping company Rosmoport in March 2006 and renamed Baltiysk on May 29, 2006 . After being converted to Russian broad gauge , the ferry now operates between Baltiysk and Ust-Luga . The ship has the ice class GL +100 A4 E4 + MC E4 AUT.
