Rain Tree Crow , is the solo album of the same name by the English band, Rain Tree Crow. It is considered the reunion project of the New Wave Band, Japan . The album was recorded between 1989 and 1990 and released in April 1991. It was after the band split in 1982, the first time that musicians David Sylvian , Mick Karn , Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri were back in the studio together. Former Japan guitarist Rob Dean did not take part in the recordings.

background

The eponymous title for the album and the band was chosen to mark a break with their musical past. With the intention of creating a new, long-term project. Since the recordings turned out to be less commercial than originally planned, the musicians, with the exception of David Sylvian, followed the idea of the record company to keep the band name Japan in order to achieve maximum awareness for this project. Sylvian disagreed and found it difficult to convince the rest of the band. The project enthusiastically started by the band members turned into a human disaster. After the end of the recording, Sylvian took the tapes and mixed the album alone against the resistance of the other members. The project name remained, Rain Tree Crow.

The English magazine Trouser Press wrote after the release: "The album does not sound particularly different from all of their earlier joint works, but they have succeeded in the great art of reviving Japan's rhythms from their later phase and that special Asian listening experience."

Publications

Blackwater was released as the only single on the album and reached number 62 on the UK Singles Chart in March 1991 . The album itself reached number 24 on the UK Albums Chart.

Rain Tree Crow was remastered in 2003 and reissued on CD. The B-side track from the Blackwater single, I Drink To Forget , was included. The title was omitted from the later LP vinyl reissue in March 2019.
