Mick Karn (born July 24, 1958 in Nicosia , Cyprus , † January 4, 2011 in London , England , actually: Adonis Michaelides ) was a British musician who was mainly known as a bassist .

Career

Mick Karn first learned woodwind instruments such as bassoon and clarinet before switching to the bass guitar. Together with David Sylvian , his brother Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri , Karn formed the band Japan . His fretless bass playing was a defining element of the band's sound.

He also worked with Gary Numan on his album Dance (1981) and after the breakup of Japan with Midge Ure (single: After a Fashion , 1983) and recorded an album in 1984 with Peter Murphy , member of the Bauhaus formation , as Dalis Car . Further collaborations were the album Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters with Steve Jansen and the participation in albums by Kate Bush and Joan Armatrading as well as some solo projects (Beard in the Letter Box, Plaster the Magic Tongue) . In the early 1990s, he founded the Medium label with Jansen and Richard Barbieri; The three musicians also worked with David Torn on his albums Bestial Cluster (1993) and The Tooth Mother (1995). During this time, Karn also worked on the band project Polytown , to which Torn and the drummer Terry Bozzio belonged (Each Eye a Path) . In 1991, Karn was again with his bandmates from Japan for the album Rain Tree Crow in the studio.

In the summer of 2010, Karn was diagnosed with advanced cancer. In support of Karn and his family, the compilation … A Show Of Love, Respect & Grace - A Tribute To Mick Karn (The Council) was released.

At the beginning of 2011, he died of cancer at the age of 52.
