Rainald (Jülich-Geldern)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainald von Jülich (* around 1365 ; † June 25, 1423 near Arnhem ) was from 1402 as Rainald IV Duke of Geldern and as Rainald I Duke of Jülich .

Life

Rainald was the son of Wilhelm II Duke von Jülich and Maria von Geldern, a daughter of Duke Rainald II von Geldern. In 1402 he succeeded his older brother Wilhelm, who died childless, as Duke of Jülich and Geldern. In 1406 he allied himself with the Wittelsbach Counts of Holland and Hainaut to prevent Anton from Burgundy succeeding him in the Duchy of Brabant , but this failed and led to the alliance breaking up. He supported the election of Ruprecht I as Roman-German king and allied himself with Ludwig von Orléans . For the support of Johann von Arkel in the fight against Holland, he received the city of Gorinchem in 1409 , which he ceded in 1412 for financial compensation. He had to leave Emmerich to the Duke of Kleve . The increasing indebtedness forced him to renew and extend the privileges of the estates. After his childless death in 1423, he was succeeded in Jülich by Adolf Herzog von Berg (from a side line of the Jülich family), while the Geldrian estates elected Arnold von Egmond , a grandson of Rainald's sister Johanna, to be duke.

family

Rainald married Maria († after 1427) in 1405, a daughter of Johann VI. by Harcourt and Aumale . The marriage remained childless. The book of hours his wife still exists today.

The duke had several bastards who were not eligible for succession in the ducal office:
