Rainer Blasius
Rainer Achim Blasius (born May 16, 1952 in Langenfeld (Rhineland) ) is a German diplomat , historian and journalist .
Life
After his military service with the mountain troops (rank: lieutenant of the reserve), the son of a civil engineer studied history, German and philosophy at the University of Cologne . There he started working for Andreas Hillgruber in 1980 with a thesis on State Secretary Ernst Frhr. von Weizsäcker in the crises around Czechoslovakia and Poland in 1938/39 as Dr. phil. PhD . In this investigation he came to the conclusion that one could not consider Ernst von Weizsäcker as a “man of resistance”.
Then Blasius worked as a historian in the federal administration for twenty years. Since 1990 he has worked as head of the branch office of the Munich Institute for Contemporary History at the Foreign Office in Bonn and was the scientific director of the edition of the "Files on the Foreign Policy of the Federal Republic of Germany".
At the end of April 2000 he left the federal service as a lecturer in the Legation Council . Since then he has been a member of the political editorship of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . There he is responsible for the “Political Books” department, and because of his own experience with authorities and intensive observation, he deals with the German civil service . Since October 2003 he has been honorary professor of history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .
In the debate about the book The Office and the Past (2010), Blasius acted as a sharp critic of the Independent Commission of Historians , which had carried out this study on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office.
"Today's opportunists write about yesterday's opportunists and firmly believe that if they had lived yesterday, they would not have been opportunists."
