Rainer Ernst Burkard (born January 28, 1943 in Graz ) is an Austrian mathematician who deals with discrete optimization and its applications.

Life

Rainer Burkard, Otto Burkard's eldest son , grew up in Graz and from 1962 studied mathematics and physics at the University of Graz and the University of Vienna . With Edmund Hlawka he wrote a dissertation on the theory of the equal distribution of real number sequences and received his doctorate in 1967 at the University of Vienna. He then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Graz, where he completed his habilitation in 1971. After guest stays at the University of Cologne and Bonn, Burkard was appointed to a chair for applied mathematics at the University of Cologne in 1973 . In the following years he set up one of the first German working groups on discrete optimization. In 1981 Burkard accepted an appointment at the Technical University of Graz , where he represented mathematics from 1981 to 2011. From 1993 to 1996 Burkard was dean of the technical and natural sciences faculty at Graz University of Technology. Burkard has been a professor emeritus at TU Graz since October 2011.

Burkard deals with structural studies of combinatorial optimization tasks and the development of efficient solution methods for these problems as well as with problems of operations research . The results have been published in several books and over 160 specialist publications.

Act

Burkard is co-editor of a number of international journals. From 1986 to 1988 he was chairman of the Austrian Society for Operations Research (ÖGOR) , from 1991 to 2000 a member of the Senate of the Christian Doppler Society , from 1994 to 1998 a council member of ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry). From 1995 to 1997 Burkard was Vice President of IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies) and 2001–2002 Vice President of EURO, the European Association of Operations Research Societies.

honors and awards

Rainer Burkard received the Austrian Mathematical Society's sponsorship award in 1972 . In 1991 the Society for Mathematics, Economics and Operations Research honored him with its science award. In 1997 Burkard was awarded the EURO Gold Medal . In 1998 Burkard was elected honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .
