from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainer Geschke (born April 1, 1947 ) was a soccer player in Magdeburg and Neubrandenburg . For 1. FC Magdeburg Geschke played in the Oberliga , the top division in GDR football.

Athletic career

Geschke initially played in the youth teams of SC Aufbau Magdeburg, the forerunner of 1. FC Magdeburg , which was founded in 1965 . In 1964 he played two international matches with the GDR junior national team. On August 22, 1965, Geschke came in the championship game SC Aufbau - SC Empor Rostock (0-0) as an attacking player for the first time in the league team as a replacement for the failed Hermann Stöcker . This season Geschke was called up in seven more point games, always in the storm for unavailable regular players. On March 2, 1966 he was with the newly founded 1. FC Magdeburg in the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in London against the English cup winners West Ham United (0-1 defeat). At the end of the season 1. FC Magdeburg was relegated to the GDR league , where Geschke was used in five point games during the 1966/67 season. After the immediate return to the league, Geschke only played twice in the season 1967/68 for Magdeburg in the league. The first half of the season 1968/69 began promisingly for Geschke, between August and October he was used in six consecutive league point games.

After his last league point game on October 5, 1968 (1. FC Magdeburg - FC Vorwärts Berlin, 4: 3) Geschke was drafted into military service, but was able to continue playing football with the army sports community Vorwärts Neubrandenburg . After the end of his army service, he did not return to higher-class football. For Magdeburg Geschke played 21 point games (3 goals), two GDR cup games and one European cup game.

Talents in oblivion?
Coach Günther Behne on Rainer Geschke (1965 UEFA squad, now 1. FC Magdeburg, reserve):
Rainer Geschke is a very talented player. Yes, I would like to say that he has everything in football. We always gave him a chance to prove himself. But he lacks the unconditional will, the healthy ambition to assert himself with all his might against our strong competition. Of course, no one is mature at the age of 20. We are sure that Rainer Geschke will still make the leap if he learns to overcome himself.
