biography

Ben Verwaayen is the fifth of six children in a family that did business in chemicals in Driebergen . In 1975 he graduated from Utrecht University with a degree in law and international relations because he actually wanted to become a journalist or a politician.

After graduating, he decided to do his military service in the Dutch Army and founded the Algemene Vereniging Nederlandse Militairen (Association of Dutch Soldiers), an association that existed until 1996.

After he left the army, he worked for a subsidiary of ITT Corporation . He received his first promotion after protesting in front of the Parliament of the European Union in Brussels about the company's alleged role in the overthrow of the Salvador Allende government in Chile - ITT then appointed him Dutch press chief.

In 1988 Verwaayen was appointed to the board of directors of PTT , today KPN , which at the time was still the state telecommunications provider in the Netherlands. In 1997 he became a member of the board of directors of Lucent Technologies and moved to the USA . An avowed Anglophile , he moved to the UK in 2002 and became the BT Group's Chief Executive Officer in 2002 . During that time he was also a board member of the Dutch TV production company Endemol and a member of the Confederation of British Industry Committee on Climate Change .

On June 1, 2008, after Ian Livingston became the new Chief Executive Officer of BT Group, there was already speculation about Ben Verwaayen's entry into politics, but he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Alcatel-Lucent on September 2, 2008 , to succeed Patricia Russo . In March 2009 he waived a bonus payment in the amount of 520,000 euros after he announced a zero round for all employees.

In February 2013 it was announced that he will no longer stand for election at the shareholders' meeting in May 2013 and will step down from his post as CEO of Alcatel-Lucent.

Ben Verwaayen has been a member of the Dutch party Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie for a long time . He sat on the party board for over ten years and worked on the party program.
