Rainer Greunke (born January 1958 in Blankenbach ) is a former German national basketball player .

At the age of 13 he started playing basketball for his home club, TV Langen . In total, he played over 1750 games for his home club. He won his first title with TV Langen in 1977 when he won the youth championship title in Leverkusen against the favored team from Göttingen . In 1978 he was promoted to the regional league with the men's team , followed by promotions to the 2nd Bundesliga and 1981 to the 1st Bundesliga.

In 1982 Greunke moved to the USA, where he studied mathematics in Anchorage and played basketball in the second college league.

Back in Germany, he played with TV Langen in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga until 1988.

Rainer Greunke made 30 international matches for Germany . He was in the squad for qualifying for the European Championship in Turkey in 1981 and also took part in the first German basketball world championship in Spain in 1986 . In 1984 he injured his finger and missed the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles .

In 2013 he became world champion in Thessaloniki with the 55+ national team . It was the first world championship title of a German men's national basketball team. In 2014, this success was followed by the European Championship title, the next success in a major tournament with an 82:60 final victory over Poland . In the semifinals , Greunke made a 43:42 win for Germany with a 3-point game seconds before the end.

Greunke is married and has two daughters. His daughter Mara also plays basketball and was used in both the second division Bender-Baskets Grünberg and in the first division with the Rhein-Main Baskets . His daughter Svenja is a national player and played for many years in the 2nd and 1st league with the Rhein-Main Baskets. Greunke is the managing director of the Hessische Krankenhausgesellschaft eV
