Rainer Hasler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainer Hasler (born July 2, 1958 in Vaduz ; † October 29, 2014 ) was a Liechtenstein soccer player. He is considered one of the most important athletes in Liechtenstein, although he never played for the Principality's national soccer team .

Career

Hasler played as a defender for the Swiss clubs Neuchâtel Xamax and Servette Geneva . He won the Swiss Cup in 1984 with the Geneva team, with whom he was captain for two years, and the national championship of the National League A in 1985 . Another great success with Xamax was reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in the 1981/82 season , where the team narrowly failed at Hamburger SV (0: 0/2: 3).

He never played for the Liechtenstein national team once during his career. The reason he later stated was that there had been uncertainties in insurance matters. The Liechtenstein team only began to take part in international competitions in the 1990s, after Hasler's resignation from professional sports.

He ended his career in 1989 at the age of just 31.

In 2004 he was the 50th UEFA -Jubiläum the Golden Player selected Liechtenstein, the best Liechtenstein players of the last fifty years.

His son Nicolas plays in Major League Soccer and since 2010 for the Principality's national soccer team.

Rainer Hasler died on October 29, 2014 as a result of cancer at the age of 56.

In December 2016, he was posthumously awarded the Golden Laurel Leaf .
