Ralf Conrad (born February 28, 1949 in Münchberg ) is a German biologist and former director at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg .

Life

Conrad studied biology at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , where he received his diploma in 1973 . In 1976 he received his doctorate in microbiology, also from the University of Göttingen. He worked as a postdoc from 1978 to 1985 at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz , interrupted by a stay at the University of Wisconsin in 1983. In 1985 he received the venia legendi and accepted a position at the University of Konstanzin 1986, where he was Professor of Microbiology until 1990. In 1991 Ralf Conrad became director at the newly founded Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg. Since 1993 he has also been an honorary professor of microbiology at the Philipps University in Marburg and since 2006 at the China Agricultural University in Beijing .

Create

Ralf Conrad's research focuses on the biogeochemistry and microbiology of the soil. He is interested in the role of microorganisms in the exchange of important greenhouse gases such as methane , nitrous oxide and hydrogen in the exchange between the soil and the atmosphere. A main focus of his work is the microbiological and biogeochemical processes in flooded rice fields , which emit the greenhouse gas methane in considerable quantities.
