Ralph Goings (born May 9, 1928 in Corning , California - September 4, 2016 ) was an American painter .

Life

Goings completed his training in 1953 at the California College of the Arts in Oakland and as an extended course until 1965 at State College in Sacramento .

Goings was already painting realistic pictures in the 1960s and quickly found photorealism , which he converted to hyperrealism in the 1970s . Going's theme is everyday American life, although he rarely paints people, but mainly objects and street scenes. He used the photographic template from his own photos. There were two main themes in his work: on the one hand automobiles , mainly trucks and pick-ups , on the other hand detailed views of the objects on tables in restaurants, such as toothpick containers , salt and pepper shakers or ketchup bottles .

Going's pictures have been exhibited worldwide and are represented in numerous collections. In 1972 Goings took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Realism Department . One of his greatest sponsors was the New York gallery owner Louis K. Meisel .

Goings lived alternately in New York and Santa Cruz .
