Ralph Gubbins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralph Grayham Gubbins (born January 31, 1932 in Ellesmere Port , † September 11, 2011 ) was an English football player .

Athletic career

Gubbins began his professional career following his military service in 1952 in the First Division with the Bolton Wanderers , where he was, however, often only second choice in the attack line with coach Bill Ridding . This was particularly evident in 1958 when the club won the FA Cup . Gubbins represented the injured Nat Lofthouse in the semifinals and made a decisive contribution to the finals with his two goals in the 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers . There, however, the recovered Lofthouse played - who scored both goals in the 2-0 final victory over Manchester United - and Gubbins only played a minor role as the twelfth man at Wembley .

In early 1960 Gubbins, who had scored 15 goals in 97 championship games in the top division, moved to Hull City in the Second Division , where he played a year and a half despite being relegated to the Third Division . He then moved to the Tranmere Rovers in the Fourth Division . Here he scored 37 goals in 107 games before ending his career at Wigan Athletic in non-league football from 1964 .
