Ramon Margalef i Lopez

Ramón Margalef i López (born May 16, 1919 in Barcelona ; † May 23, 2004 ibid) was a Catalan ecologist , environmental scientist and limnologist . He taught ecology at the University of Barcelona .

Life

Margalef worked at the Institute for Applied Biology (1946–1951) and at the Institute for Fisheries Research, which he headed from 1966 to 1967. He created the Department of Ecology at the University of Barcelona, ​​where he directed a large number of ecologists, limnologists and oceanographers . In 1967 he became Spain's first professor of ecology.

Awards

He has received various prizes and awards, including the Premio Ramón y Cajal , the Premio Nacional de Medio Ambiente and in 1989 the Naumann-Thienemann Medal of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae . In 1985 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

The Scientific Research Vessel Ramón Margalef , which went into service in the summer of 2011 and carried out investigations after a submarine volcanic eruption off El Hierro in the following autumn, is named after him . The annual Premi Ramon Margalef for ecology of the Generalitat de Catalunya is named after him .
