Ramón María del Valle-Inclán
Ramón María del Valle-Inclán (born October 28, 1866 in Vilanova de Arousa , Galicia , † January 5, 1936 in Santiago de Compostela ) was a Spanish playwright and novelist and belonged to the Generación del 98 . He is considered to be the inventor of the literary genre of " Esperpento ", a dramatic genre of bizarre and vicious shock pieces.
meaning
Valle-Inclán is regarded as one of the most important and certainly the most radical among the playwrights who pushed for subversion against the traditionalism prevailing in the Spanish theater establishment in the early 20th century . His dramatic work is of particular importance because of the influence it had on subsequent generations of writers.
Valle-Inclán's works (e.g. miraculous words and glamor of the bohemians ) attack what he saw as the hypocrisy , moralizing and sentimentality of the bourgeois dramatists, and paint a satirical, gloomy picture of the ways of thinking and living of the ruling class. In particular, he targets concepts such as male honor , militarism , patriotism, and deference to the Crown and the Catholic Church . He also portrayed political figures from the Spanish past in a disrespectful manner, using obscene language and vulgar imagery to attack theatrics and euphemisms .
Valle-Inclán's plays were not only politically subversive, but also often required intensive rehearsals and stage technology that went far beyond the capabilities of commercial theater groups. There were complex, difficult-to-implement special effects and rapid, often drastic, changes in the stage design .
Valle-Inclán also wrote important novels, including Tirano Banderas , who greatly influenced the South American dictatorial novel (e.g. Yo el supremo , Eng. I, the Almighty by Augusto Roa Bastos ).
