Ramūnas Karbauskis (born December 5, 1969 in Naisiai , Rajongemeinde Šiauliai ) is a Lithuanian agricultural entrepreneur and politician , former Seimas parliamentary vice-president, patron of culture , honorary citizen of the Rajongemeinde Šiauliai.

Life

After graduating from the Julius-Janonis-Gymnasium in Šiauliai in 1988 , Ramūnas Karbauskis graduated from the Lietuvos žemės ūkio akademija near Kaunas in 1994 with a degree in agronomy .

Career as an entrepreneur

In 1990 Ramūnas Karbauskis founded the company Agrokoncernas . The arable land of the former model kolkhoz " Už taiką " ("For Peace") in Naisiai, which his father Česlovas Vytautas Karbauskis had managed since 1969 and which was dissolved in the early 1990s, went into the group. Ramūnas Karbauskis is a major shareholder of the “Agrokoncernas” group and heads it as President. The agro-group cultivates 35,000 hectares of land and sells seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and agricultural machinery. In addition, “Agrokoncernas” buys the grain harvest from the farmers and handles an estimated third of Lithuania's grain exports.

Karbauskis tried repeatedly (so far in vain) to have a ban on selling land to foreigners enshrined in the Lithuanian constitution through a referendum . He wants to protect smallholders from foreign speculators driving up land prices. His critics object that such a ban would primarily benefit himself, insofar as he, who buys more farmland than anyone else, would then no longer have any competitors.

Career as a politician

From 1997 to 2001 Karbauskis headed the Lithuanian Peasant Party. From 1996 to 2004 he was a member of the Seimas and from 2000 to 2001 Deputy Speaker of Parliament. From 1997 to 2000 he was a member of the council of the Rajonggemeinde Šiauliai. From 2009 he headed the farmers' party again, which was now called the “ Bund der Bauern und Grünen ” ( Lietuvos valstiečių ir žaliųjų sąjunga , LVŽS). In the parliamentary elections in October 2016, the LVŽS surprisingly won 54 of the 141 seats in the Seimas, making it the strongest party.

Act as a patron of culture

Karbauskis donated several museums, cultural and sports clubs and a large stadium to his home village of Naisiai. The “Naisių vasara” festival for theater, music and Lithuanian handicrafts, which he sponsors, attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Naisiai every year. For the television series of the same name "Naisių vasara", the village of Naisiai also provides the framework and the name.

Successes and functions in sport

From 1987 to 1988 he was a member of the Soviet-Lithuanian national team in junior checkers . He has the title of candidate for master of sport in checkers. Since 2006 he has been president of the "Lietuvos šaškių federacija" (Checkers Association) and since 2009 vice-president of the "Lietuvos žemaitukų asociacija" (Horse Breeding Association).
