The Brahetrolleborg Castle was created from the former monastery Holme (Insula Dei), a Cistercian monastery on the island of Funen in Denmark . Since its secularization , the complex has been known as Brahetrolleborg Castle.

location

Brahetrolleborg Castle is located around 10 km northeast of Fåborg on the island of Funen (Fyn) near today's town of Corinth.

history

The monastery was founded in 1172 by Herrevad Monastery in Skåne , now Sweden , a subsidiary of the Cîteaux Monastery . With the Reformation and the end of the count's feud in 1536, the monastery passed into state ownership and changed hands several times in quick succession, until King Friedrich II sold it to the governor of the royal shares of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein Heinrich Rantzau in 1568 , after whom it was Rantzausholm was called. In 1661 the estate fell back to the Danish Crown, which sold the estate in 1664 to the Holstein merchant Christoffer von Gabel , who exchanged it three years later for the Kalkberg von Segeberg . After the new owner Brigitte Brahe geb. Trolls, it has been called Brahetrolleborg since 1667 . The castle has belonged to the Reventlow family since it was acquired by Altona Christian Detlev von Reventlow's chief president in 1722 . In 1960 it was inherited from the Reventlow to the Mourier family.

Buildings and plant

The church built according to the Bernhardine plan is now the church of Brahetrolleborg. It has a tower in the facade and has a crucifix by Claus Berg , which was created by him around 1500. The monastery to the right of the church was converted into a castle.
