Raoul II de Brienne
Raoul II. De Brienne († November 19, 1350 in Paris ) was the son of Raoul I de Brienne , Count of Eu and Guînes , and Jeanne de Mello . In 1344 he followed his father as both Count and Connétable of France . In 1340 he married Katharina , daughter of Ludwig II of Savoy-Vaud and Isabelle de Châlon , and widow of Azzo Visconti . He had no legitimate children, only one illegitimate son, Jean du Bois , seigneur de Maison Forte .
During the siege of Caen in 1346, Raoul was captured by the English army led by Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent . In autumn 1350 he was allowed to return to France after he had managed to raise 60,000 gold écu ransom .
After arriving in Paris, he was arrested on November 18, 1350 and locked up in the Louvre , the reasons for which are unclear. The next day he was beheaded in the courtyard of the Louvre on the orders of the king and without trial . The execution brought John II the enmity of a large part of the French nobility, especially those who had family ties with Raoul II de Brienne.
Raoul's successor as Connétable was Charles de la Cerda , who had worked towards it for a long time. The county of Guînes was confiscated and incorporated into the Domaine royal , the county of Eu was given to Jean d'Artois , called Jean Sans Terre, the son of Robert III. by Artois . On January 22, 1351, the castle of Guînes fell into the hands of the English through treason. In 1360, in the Peace of Brétigny, the city and county were completely assigned to England.
