Ras Sheehama

Ras Sheehama (* 1966 in Onakayale , South West Africa , today Namibia ), whose real name is Omeho Yaaliyatala , is a Namibian reggae musician.

Life

Ras Sheehama grew up in northern Namibia. His father's pro- SWAPO standpoint forced him into exile in Angola and Zambia in 1979 . There he began to sing and play the guitar and came into contact with the Rastafarian and reggae culture for the first time .

During his high school years 1984-1988 in Lagos ( Nigeria ) he played in the school band. He was influenced by Nigerian artists such as Fela Kuti . In 1986 he recorded his first demo . In 1988 he joined the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe in Angola .

In 1989 he returned to Namibia and went on tour with Ndilimani as part of the election campaign for the first free elections in 1990. In 1990 he started his solo career. He released three albums on Paul Joubert Music that only appeared in Namibia as MCs . He has appeared as the opening act for Manu Dibango , Salif Keïta , Ismaël Lô , Lucky Dube and Brenda Fassie and toured the UK with Music Circuit .

In 1996 Ras Sheehama released his first CD album Traveling . He won the NBC Music Makers Award , performed at the French Festival Printemps de Bourges and as the opening act for Ismaël Lô on Réunion . In 1997 he represented Namibia at the Expo in Portugal .

From 1997 to 2002 he made recordings and performances with the band of Lucky Dube and with Stimela . He made his first appearance in Germany in 1999 at the Africa Festival in Würzburg . In Johannesburg he was the opening act for Don Carlos. He won a Sanlam Music Award and a Namibia Music Award.

From 2002 to 2005 he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival , the Fêtes de Genève, at Canterbury University and at the Trnkobrani Open Air in the Czech Republic . In 2006 he won a Sanlam Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music .
