Town hall experts
The town hall of Könnern is a monument in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .
Könnern developed into a city in the 14th century. Exact dates for obtaining various market rights (Christmas market, Easter market) are not known, only that the Bartholomäimarkt was added in 1480. The city owed its further prosperity to the copper slate mining and then mainly to the development of lignite until the 18th century. This led to the settlement of numerous factories.
This development explains why the city has an impressive town hall despite a relatively small population. This building characterizes the higher market square, on the north side of which it stands. Flanked by seven window axes each, the middle section is particularly emphasized on both the north and south sides of the building. While on the south side of the market there is a tower risalit with arched windows, a balcony, a statue of St. Wenceslaus , to whom the nearby church is dedicated, a square tower gallery and an octagonal lantern with a pyramid helmet, the north side also has a central risalit.
The first evidence of a town hall is dated to 1364. A new building was built in 1753. The current building, however, dates back to 1862 and combines elements of different architectural styles. The risalit is neo-Romanesque , but the building structure is symmetrical and therefore still clinging to classicism . In contrast, the flat arches of most of the windows are typical of Baroque architecture . The building is most likely to be assigned to the round arch style, which attempted to break away from classicism in the middle of the 19th century by referring to German models. This can also be seen clearly from the arched friezes on the gables and eaves.
The town hall of Könnern is under monument protection and is registered in the monument register with the number 094 60460. While most of the building is made of rubble, the tower top is made of brick. It is still the seat of the city administration today. In the course of time it also housed the administration, a school, the police and prison, the district court and an inn.
