history
The building, which was originally at the location of today's town hall and has been documented since 1611, was acquired by the municipality in 1788 and converted into the town hall by 1801. Previously, the building with today's address at 16 Hauptplatz was used as the town hall. In 1910, Emperor Franz I and his wife stayed in the town hall. Between 1848 and 1900, the city administration moved to the old savings bank building in Rechtsgasse 1–3, as the town hall was the seat of the district court . But from 1900 the city administration was again in the building at Hauptplatz 1.
The Sparkasse Voitsberg-Köflach had an exchange office set up in the building in 1958. After a fire, the building was demolished in 1966 and replaced by a new building in 1966/67. The Viennese artist Arik Brauer redesigned the outer facade in the style of Fantastic Realism in 2002 and in 2003 the town hall got a carillon .
description
Today's town hall was built in 1966/67 according to plans by the architect Alois Blaha and under the supervision of the city architect Karl Probst. The outer facade of the town hall was redesigned in 2002 by Arik Brauer in the style of fantastic realism with hand-painted tiles in mosaic form . The tiles cover an area of around 120 square meters and show figurative sayings. The gable shows a tree crown in the middle, which has a recess in the shape of a dove of peace . The fruits falling from the tree are caught by Adam and Eve . On the left side of the gable there are two pictures that show a man playing a harmonica and who is delighting plants and birds. The two pictures on the right-hand side of the gable show a woman watching the birds building their nests. The 29 pictures on all sides of the building show the following sayings:
- Lies have short legs.
- Never say too quickly.
- Do not make yourself an enemy image, it could be a self-image.
- The short speech long sense.
- Time is money - money is not time.
- Those who do not honor the small are not worth the great.
- What you don't have in your head, you have in your legs.
- Followed - hung up.
- Never joke an animal because it feels like you are in pain.
- There is nothing bad unless you want to.
- What you don't want someone to do to you, don't do it to anyone else.
- What wants to be a tick has to bend over time.
- The way to a man's heart goes through his stomach.
- No light without shadow.
- Old love doesn't rust.
- The fish stinks in the head.
- There is nothing good, unless you do it.
- The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
- Talk is silver, silence is gold.
- No pain no gain.
- Morgenstund` has gold in its mouth.
- Who laughs last, laughs best.
- Easy come easy go.
- Haughtiness comes before the event.
- Exuberance is rarely good.
- Anyone who digs a pit for others will fall into it themselves.
- Where love falls, there is a fire.
- The jug goes to the well until it breaks.
- Everything that has wings flies.
The carillon , installed in 2003, has six ceramic figures, which represent peace, justice, wisdom, love, courage and nature conservation. The melody of the Erzherzog-Johann-Lied plays every hour.
The staircase and the corridors of the town hall serve as a permanent gallery for works by local artists such as Friedrich Aduatz , Gottfried Fabian , Alfred Schlosser and Franz Weiss, as well as a space for vernissages .
