The Voitsberger Mariensäule is a religious monument in the municipality of Voitsberg in western Styria . It was built in the middle of the 18th century and is a listed building .

location

The Marian column is right in the center of the main square of the municipality of Voitsberg, at the intersection with Bahnhofstrasse. The Voitsberg town hall and the Michaelskirche are located directly behind the column .

history

Between 1713 and 1716 Voitsberg was ravaged by the plague and the Counts of Wagensperg made a vow that they would erect a monument to Mary when the epidemic subsided. The vow was redeemed in 1753 when the aristocratic family donated today's Marian column. In the same year the baroque sculptor Josef Schokotnigg was commissioned to erect the monument. The solemn inauguration of the finished monument took place on August 2, 1755.

Major renovations took place in 1906. The column was again extensively restored by the restorer Heinz Hiebl in 1978.

description

The Marian column consists of a high stone column, which is crowned by a figure of Maria Immaculata . The family coat of arms of Count Wagen von Wagensperg on the column reminds of the donors. The column is surrounded by eight figures of saints that stand on high pedestals . At the base of the column there is a figure of Joseph of Nazareth with the baby Jesus on a console and on the back of the column there is the figure of John Nepomuk . On the sides of the column are the figures of Anna and Joachim . The figures of John the Evangelist , John the Baptist , Rochus and Sebastian stand on individual plinths around the column. Except for the figure of Johannes Nepomuk, who looks to the east, all the figures look to the west, towards the Holy Mountain and Maria Lankowitz . There is a stone altar table in front of the column. The column and all figures were made from Aflenz sandstone .

The water pipes found in the main plinth during restoration work in 1978 suggest that it was originally constructed as a well. However, it is also possible that the column was erected over the earlier system of a city fountain.
