The Church of St. Michael , also known as the City Church of St. Michael , is a Roman Catholic branch church in the municipality of Voitsberg in western Styria . Its history goes back to the second half of the 13th century.

Location

The church is located south of the main square in the city of Voitsberg, at Michaeliplatz 1.

history

The church was first mentioned on August 21, 1268 as a branch of the Margarethenkirche . It was not until January 24, 1403 that the next document was mentioned when a larger donation from Pastor Hans von Heiligenstatt was made to the St. Nicholas altar in the church. At that time the Nikolaus altar was the seat of its own chaplaincy . Through a foundation made in January 1445 by the citizen Siegmund Schadeckher, the Michael Church came into the possession of a community center in the town of Voitsberg. The choir was enlarged and rebuilt during the 14th century. The current nave was built in the second half of the 15th century and Gothicized in the early 16th century. The western facade was heavily redesigned in 1893. The church tower was badly damaged by lightning strikes in 1607 and was not restored until 1611 by master Peter. In 1626, the interior of the church was repainted and repair work took place. The nave was re-covered in 1648 and then again in 1772 and the church tower in 1656. In 1675 the tower was damaged again by a storm and was replaced. During a total renovation of the church led by the architect Robert Mikovics in 1892, the interior was brought back to the medieval, Gothic building stock and the polygon choir was rebuilt. In 1956 and 1977 further renovation work took place in the interior and between 2000 and 2002 the windows were refurbished.

description

The death lamp, which is located next to the church

The church is essentially a late Romanesque , three-aisled and five-bay hall church with a Gothic choir extension and a mighty four- story square choir tower . There are stepped buttresses on the outside of the choir. The Romanesque west arched portal from the first half of the 13th century was modeled on that of the Wilhering collegiate church and was heavily redesigned in 1893. It is stepped twice and has a sharp-edged, but otherwise unprofiled, rectangular frame and a continuous transom profile with a bulge and a plate above. The Gothic north portal is profiled and has a shoulder arch . Next to the church is erected in the first quarter of the 16th century, and a death lamp that was heavily renewed in 1936 and 1937 .

The three-aisled and five-bay nave is spanned by a ribbed vault resting on octagonal pillars . The wall brackets and the keystones in the central nave are decorated with coats of arms, which are only partially understandable. The Heiliggeistloch with a dove is located in the middle yoke and is surrounded by the four coats of arms, that of the Habsburgs , that of Austria and Styria and the city arms of Voitsberg. The square of the tower is vaulted with ribs . The single-bay and also rib-vaulted choir adjoins the tower square to the east and has a five-eighth end . The triumphal arch is strongly drawn in. There is a shoulder arch portal in both the tower yoke and the choir . There is also a wall niche with a three-pass arch in the choir . The gallery arched with cross ribs is located in the western part of the nave. The tracery windows have been renewed and have neo-Gothic window panes from 1893.

The church furnishings are in the neo-Gothic style. On the neo-Gothic high altar, which was erected after 1892 according to a design by Ludwig von Kurz zum Thurn and Goldenstein , there are several figures made by Jakob Gschiel in 1891. The tabernacle was erected in 1832. The pictures on the side altars were painted in 1900 by Ludwig von Kurz zum Thurn and Goldenstein. Furthermore, a copy of the Mariahilfer miraculous image and a portrait of St. Joseph hang in the church , both of which were painted by August Kraus in 1879 . The baptismal font of the church is late Gothic. Next to the north portal of the church is a red marble holy water basin, dated 1523, which was donated by Hans Schmit, as indicated by an inscription and a coat of arms with a depicted salt barrel. Another holy water basin at the southern side entrance shows the coat of arms of the city judge Jörg Egner, who can be verified between 1490 and 1505, decorated with three lilies .

Several coats of arms and tombstones can be found throughout the church. At the end of the choir, for example, there is a portrait relief from 1587 showing Christoff Grabner and his wife Elisabeth. The gravestone of Christoph Würtzperger, who died in 1586, is adorned with a relief of the couple in front of a cross and a house sign . The relief on the tombstone of Blasius Wolff, who died in 1589, is badly damaged. The church also contains the tombstone of Christoff Prem, who died in 1587, and that of Martin Jakob Pircker, which is kept in rococo style. A Ragkniz coat of arms stone dates from around 1600.

organ

The organ, built in 1893, comes from the Jägerndorfer Werkstätte Gebrüder Rieger and was built as Opus 432 with a cone shutter system. The work has 16 sounding registers and is in its original state. A renovation took place in 2002 by organ builder Hartinger from Graz.
