Rathmannsdorfer lock
The Rathmannsdorfer lock from 1784 is the third of a total of six locks of the former Eider Canal . A renovation of the structure with the exception of its movable accessories took place in 1984.
Location
The Rathmannsdorfer Schleuse is located on the northern edge of the Achtstückberg (23 m) southeast of the Rathmannsdorf estate and northwest of the Projensdorf estate on the lands of the Projensdorf estate , which belongs to the Altenholz community . The publicly accessible facility can be reached via the K 19 district road. A section of the Eider Canal has been preserved for around two kilometers in the direction of Gut Knoop and is accessible via a hiking trail on the northeast side.
Construction
The lock was built in 1784 under the direction of the carpenters Johann and Hartwig Holler from Wilster . Like the other five locks on the Eider Canal, it was a two-chamber lock: the large chamber (35 m long and 7.8 m wide) was used for shipping traffic with a lifting height of 2.60 meters; The water level could be regulated by means of the small free chamber (35 m long and 4.9 m wide). The ship's chamber took ships up to 160 tons of payload, with emptying or filling the chamber by shooting in the gates took about five minutes. The double-leaf gates made of oak planks were opened by winches .
The apex position of the Eider Canal and thus its highest stretch was between the Rathmannsdorfer and the Königsförder lock. The water required for canal operation flowed between these two systems from the Eider and Levensau rivers .
The walls of the chambers are made of double-walled brickwork, the bricks of which were fired in Hellingoer (Holland). The masonry was covered with Bornholm sandstone . The hinge brackets of the lock gates were made of Norwegian granite .
In contrast to the other locks, the Rathmannsdorfer lock did not have a bridge crossing over the canal. The respective ship chambers in Holtenau , Gut Knoop , Königsförde , Kluvensiek and Rendsburg crossed bascule bridges built in the Dutch style , which were made by the Carlshütte in Büdelsdorf. The bridges in Königsförde and Kluvensiek have been preserved.
