Iskald ( norw . For ice cold ) is a black metal band from Bodø , Norway .

history

Iskald was founded in spring 2005 by Simon Larsen ( guitar , vocals ) and Aage Krekling ( drums ). After a demo recording, the first EP Northern Twilight was recorded, produced and released that same year, in December . Since the band financed the recording and publication themselves, only 400 copies of the demo were pressed.

In September 2006 the two members retired to the Ballerina Audio studios to record the first studio album Shades of Misery , which was released in March 2007 by the Norwegian label Indie Recordings and was able to impress with its high musical level.

Due to the consistently positive feedback from critics and fans , a live lineup with guest musicians was set up. In particular these were Rene Zonneveld and Espen Solstad. The band then played a few concerts , the highlight of which was a performance at the Inferno Metal Festival Norway in March 2008, when Iskald performed with bands such as Satyricon , Behemoth and Gorgoroth .

In July 2008 the band flew to Berlin to record the second album called Relevations of a Reckoning Day in the 210 studio , which was also produced in the same studio by Stamos Koiousis ( Mencea ) and Vangelis Labrakis ( Stonegard ) and in September 2008 by Indie Recordings was released. At the end of the year the album was named album of the year by the webzine streetswebzine.com .

On November 22, 2010, the band announced the release of their third studio album called The Sun I Carried Alone , which was released on January 17, 2011. As with the previous album, the recordings for the album took place in the 210 studios , with Stamos Koiousis and Vangelis Labrakisin as producers in Berlin. The album promotion took place as part of the “Vintertour II” as the opening act for the Norwegian band Vreid .

style

Iskald play a very melodic form of Black Metal with clear influences from Thrash Metal , so that musically they can also be assigned to Extreme Metal . The music is compared by the trade press with bands such as Naglfar and Dark Tranquility . The band also refuses to describe the music as (classic) Black Metal. Unlike most bands of the genre, the band completely dispenses with the usual aesthetic elements such as spikes and rivets and corpse paints when performing .

The band's compositions are often praised by the trade press for their sophistication and sophistication. This is particularly evident in the many successful tempo changes and the "lush arrangements". The musicians in the band have a high level of playing ability. The guitar characters often contain complicated and difficult riffs and leads, and the drums are usually complex too. Especially with older songs, the band dispensed with conventional song structures consisting of verse and chorus . Another difference in Iskald's compositions is noticeable when compared to “normal” black metal bands. Especially on the third album The Sun I Carried Alone there are numerous melodies in the songs, which is rather unusual for the genre.

The lyrics of the songs are in English and Norwegian and are themed about the Last Judgment and Norse mythology .

Live cast

Iskald will be supported by guest musicians Ben Hansen (bass) and Espen Solstad (guitar) when performing live. Compared to guest musicians from other bands, Hansen and Solstad are relatively well integrated into the band. Drummer Aage Krekling said in an interview with the webzine metal.de as follows:

“At the beginning we only wanted to hire live musicians, but now they are also involved in the songwriting and will most likely be on the next recordings. Simon and I will nevertheless remain ISKALD's core, because we simply know best what ISKALD is all about. "

- Aage Krekling
