Christian Degn (born December 13, 1909 in Bremen , † May 22, 2004 in Kiel ) was a German historian . He is considered one of the most prominent regional historians in Schleswig-Holstein .

The son of an engineer graduated from the Kiel School of Academics in 1928 . After studying history, geography and Latin philology in Freiburg im Breisgau , Copenhagen and Kiel , he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD with a thesis on Orla Lehmann . In 1934 Degn passed the first state examination. He completed his legal clerkship in Kiel and Plön. The second state examination followed in 1936. He went to Schulpforta as an assessor . In World War II he was a naval officer. From 1948 he taught as a teacher until 1951 at the Goetheschule in Flensburg and then at the Hebbelschule in Kiel . From 1965 he taught as a professor for history and methodology of history teaching at the University of Education in Flensburg , where he was rector from 1967 to 1969. From 1974 to 1978 Degn held the chair for Schleswig-Holstein State History as the successor to Alexander Scharff . With Degn's appointment, the Kiel professorship for regional history also changed. Schleswig-Holstein and Nordic history were separated from each other and two chairs were created. Degn was the first to hold a professorship solely for Schleswig-Holstein history. He was chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein History Teachers Association and on the board of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History. In 1958 he joined the Grenzfriedensbund . In 1974 he was awarded the Lornsen chain of the Schleswig-Holstein Homeland Federation for his services to Schleswig-Holstein's national and homeland awareness . After many years of research in archives in Schleswig and Copenhagen and several study trips, one of his main works was published in 1974: The Schimmelmanns in the Atlantic triangular trade. Profit and conscience . The book documents the rise and decline of two generations who were the treasure keepers of the Danish king and who were also among the greatest slave traders and owners of the 18th century.

His last major work was Schleswig-Holstein, a state history (1994). In 150 essays he dealt with the core topics of Schleswig-Holstein's history and illustrated them with extensive pictures, maps and graphics. From 1951 to 1973 Degn was co-editor of the revised “Seydlitz”, a presentation for geographic teaching.
