chronology
- Raveland We (1995)

Raveland is the debut album from German Techno - DJ and - producer Marusha . It was released on June 6, 1994 on the Berlin record label Low Spirit .

Emergence

Marusha produced all tracks on the album together with techno producer Klaus Jankuhn ( Members of Mayday ). Keyboard player and music producer Bernd Burhoff (Beat in Time, Dune ) also worked on the last track Upside Down .

The title Somewhere over the Rainbow was based on a song by Harold Arlen (music) and EY Harburg (text) from the classic film The Magic Land from 1939. All other pieces were new compositions.

The tracks Go Ahead, It Takes Me Away and Somewhere over the Rainbow had previously been released as a single. The track We Are the Bass was also an older production and was previously used by Marusha as the theme music for her music show Feuerreiter .

Cover design

The cover shows Marusha in a dance pose in front of a colorful, psychedelic pattern. The photo of the artist comes from the photographer Bernhard Kühmstedt. In the upper right corner, the words "marusha" and "raveland" can be read in lower case .

reception

The album received average to negative reviews in the majority of German music magazines. This is how the critic Christof Hammer judged in the magazine Stereoplay :

“Who knows better what the little ones like? Marusha, the kindergarten aunt in the rave circus, wallpapered her "Raveland" soft-poppy with harmonies of the brand " Hänschenklein " and " Alle meine Entchen " - teen techno for kids who are crazy about dancing. "

- Stereoplay, August 15, 1994

In the international press, however , Raveland was received more positively. The US music magazine Billboard wrote :

"The album," Raveland ", reflects Marusha's good-humored, techno party spirit."

- Billboard, March 4, 1995

On the occasion of the Marusha album Heat , released in 2007, Der Tagesspiegel judged in retrospect that Raveland was “cool and staccato”, but marked their biggest hit to date with the single Somewhere Over The Rainbow .

success

The album entered the German album charts on June 20, 1994 and stayed there for a total of 24 weeks. Raveland achieved the highest ranking in the week from July 18 to 24, 1994 with number 4 in the German album charts.

The album was also placed in the Austrian charts (6 weeks, highest position 31st) and in the Swiss charts (15 weeks, highest position 15).

With Go Ahead , It Takes Me Away , Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Raveland , four pieces from the album were also released as maxi single. Except for Raveland , all singles were released before the album was released. The most successful release was Somewhere Over the Rainbow , which stayed in the German single charts for over 30 weeks and was at number 3 in the charts for three weeks.

In the techno scene itself, chart successes by Marusha and other low-spirit artists such as WestBam or RMB were seen as ambivalent. On the one hand, Raveland was one of the first techno albums to make it into the charts, on the other hand, the low-spirit sound was often rejected as "too mass-compatible".
