Liverpool Gangster (OT: Going Off Big Time ) is a British gangster film directed by Jim Doyle from 2000.

action

The news spreads across Liverpool : Mark Clayton murdered Billy Hannassey, the son of the well-known gang boss George Hannassey. His followers are now after him and storm the bar, which serves as a meeting place for Mark's crew. However, Mark hides with his lawyer Stacey and recapitulates his life path:

At a young age he got into trouble with a well-known thug. While trying to avoid him, he mistakenly attacks a police officer and is sentenced to four years in prison. The years are tough and he only gets through them with the help of an elderly inmate named Murray, who takes him under his wing. When the thug Ozzi comes to the prison, Mark develops a friendship with the somewhat stupid looking man. Ozzi receives a severe punishment for a stupid prank and has to go to a beefy prisoner who is notorious for raping his cellmates. Mark can't watch this for long and makes a plan with Ozzie. They beat up the rapist. When he comes back, however, he kills Murray instead of the two, who tries to mediate.

When Mark finally comes out, he is desperately trying to get a job, but he is repeatedly asked about his prison term. Annoyed, he gives up and turns to a petty criminal boss who brings him into the drug business. Mark contacts Ozzi and hires his crew to do the drug business with the ice cream truck. When she tries to fob her boss with a mere 100 pounds , the crew decides to attack. You kill the boss and take over his business without further ado. So they start to take over the drug market in the clubs and try to be protection rackets . During one of these actions, Mark is arrested, but is released shortly afterwards. In their business they stepped on George Hannassey's feet, and Mark is now reminding him of the hierarchy.

Mark, much to the annoyance of Ozzie, who feels left out, gives in and focuses again on easier jobs. Mark has also met Natasha in the meantime, his first serious relationship. Before she wants to introduce him to her father, Ozzi and George escalate. Mark tries to mediate, but Ozzi has lost control and plans to revenge. However, Mark sees Natasha as an escape from his old life and hopes for a fresh start. Unfortunately, Natasha's father turns out to be a building contractor whom Mark had betrayed before. When Mark realizes he's tied to his gangster life, he decides to listen to Ozzi. Together they storm a pub where Billy Hannassey goes. Mark scares him and fires a warning shot. But that is not enough for Ozzi, and he shoots the boss' son.

After Mark reports this to his lawyer, he tries to escape in her car. In the meantime, Ozzi has been shot by George's henchmen and Mark is also shot in his getaway car.

background

The British independent film was shot in 2000. The film received three nominations at the British Independent Film Awards and director Jim Doyle received one nomination for the Douglas Hickox Award , which is given to the director for best debut film. However, both came away empty-handed. In the wake of the success of British gangster and hooligan films such as Snatch - Pigs and Diamonds , Layer Cake and The Football Factory , the film was also released in Germany in 2008, released by Ascot Elite.

criticism

"A film about the rise and fall of a gangster who wins people over with the realistic drawing of the milieu, but otherwise freezes into clichés."
