Ray Smith (actor)
Ray Smith (born May 1, 1936 in Trealaw , Rhondda , Wales , † December 15, 1991 in Llandough , Vale of Glamorgan , Wales) was a British actor .
Life
Smith grew up the son of a miner who was killed in an industrial accident when Smith was three years old. After completing his schooling and military service in the British Army , he played at The Prince of Wales Theater in Cardiff . He moved to London in the late 1950s to begin an acting career. In 1959 he made his debut in an episode of the BBC series BBC Sunday-Night Theater . In the same year he played a police officer in four episodes of the series Nick of the River . In the early 1960s, he also received supporting roles in British films such as The Last Journey by U 153 . In the children's TV program Jackanory , he appeared in 23 episodes between 1967 and 1971 as a storyteller. From 1971 to 1975 he played a police officer again in the crime series Public Eye . He gained greater fame in German-speaking countries through his portrayal of Chief Superintendent Gordon Spikings in the television series Dempsey & Makepeace .
Smith suffered a heart attack while filming the television adaptation of Kingsley Amis ' novel The Old Devils and died at the age of 55.
