Raymond Damadian
Raymond Vahan Damadian (born March 16, 1936 in New York , New York ) is an American medic of Armenian descent. He is a co-inventor of magnetic resonance imaging (MRT), at that time still called magnetic resonance imaging , a medical procedure with which cancer can be detected in living people.
In 1971 Damadian claimed to have found that the relaxation times in diseased and healthy tissue are different. Other scientists couldn't reproduce that. He also developed the concept of the full body scan for the human body. He carried out one on July 3, 1977 for the first time. His invention, for which he also received a patent in 1974, only included image-free cancer detection and was later replaced by other methods.
When Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield were awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their contributions to pictorial magnetic resonance imaging, Damadian was passed over, causing long-running controversy. In various daily newspapers, Damadian tried unsuccessfully with full-page advertisements to change the mind of the Nobel Committee.
Damadian received other honors for his invention:
- National Medal of Technology 1988
- he was inducted into the American National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1989
- Lemelson MIT Prize 2001
- Bower Award in Business Leadership from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia
- Innovation Award in Bioscience from The Economist in September 2003
- "Knights of Vartan" - "Man of the Year" 2003
Since 1978 Damadian has been president of the company he founded, FONAR, a manufacturer of MRI machines.
