Raymond Noorda

Raymond John Noorda , called Ray , (born June 19, 1924 in Ogden , Utah , † October 9, 2006 in Orem , Utah) was an American businessman. He became known as the CEO of Novell between 1982 and 1994. He was also Chairman of Novell until he was replaced in 1994.

Noorda is considered by many to be the originator of the term coopetition .

Noorda was born in Ogden, Utah, the third son of Dutch immigrants Bertus and Alida Noorda. He attended Weber State College in Ogden. During the Second World War he served for two years in the US Navy as an electrical engineer for radar systems . He graduated Cum laude with a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Utah in 1949 .

Noorda married Lewena (Tye) Taylor on August 14, 1950.

Noorda worked for General Electric from his graduation until 1971 . He then worked for a number of California companies.

Novell

In 1983 he founded the SuperSet team, which also included Drew Major , Dale Niebaur and Kyle Powell . Initially, the team was responsible for creating a CP / M system, but instead they developed a successful file system for the new IBM compatible PCs. This network operating system was later called Novell NetWare . Noorda led Novell until 1994.

Noorda received honorary doctorates from the University of Utah (1994) and Weber State University (1995).

Next life

He owned the Canopy Group until his death . As a consequence of his age-related illnesses ( Alzheimer's and heart disease), he has not participated in the day-to-day business of the Canopy Group since 1998.

On March 17, 2005, his only daughter Val Noorda Kreidel committed suicide at the age of 49. She left her husband, four daughters and one son.

Noorda was a lifelong member of the Mormons ( Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ).

Noorda died on October 9, 2006 in his hometown of Orem, Utah.
