Raymond MacDonald

Raymond R. MacDonald (* 1968 ) is a British musicologist and jazz and improvisation musician ( saxophone , composition ) who works as a university teacher.

Live and act

MacDonald first played guitar in an indie band during his doctoral studies at the University of Glasgow , then he played jazz in various bands. In the mid-1990s, George Burt asked him to join his group and switch to the saxophone. He continued to play in a quartet led by Burt, which expanded to include an octet to which Lol Coxhill was a member ( Tsunami , 2000).

MacDonald is the founder and director of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra , which has developed through collaborations and a. with Evan Parker (2003), Maggie Nicols (2004), Barry Guy (2005) and George Lewis (2007). Other projects include the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band (album Buddy , including with Jim O'Rourke , Satoko Fujii and Natsuki Tamura ), the Sub-Urban Collective and Rich in Knuckles (with Christoph Reiserer , Graeme Wilson , Markus Heinze ). In the field of jazz he was involved in at least 22 recording sessions between 2000 and 2010. a. also with Marilyn Crispell , Neil Davidson , Satoko Fujii, Peter Nicholson and Baby Sommer .

MacDonald was also the artistic director of the Sounds of Progress music project , which worked with people with disabilities; he continued to research the therapeutic possibilities of music. As a professor he taught at Glasgow Caledonian University until 2012 , since then he has been a member of the faculty at Edinburgh College of Art, where he directs the Reid School of Music and teaches music psychology and improvisation. He wrote a number of articles and books, including a. Musical Identities (2002), Musical Communication (2005), Music Health and Wellbeing (2012) and Musical Imaginations (2012). He has also composed music for film, television, theater, radio and art installations.
