The approximately 4.5 kilometer long Reach Lode is being built northwest of Reach . First it flows a little more than 3 kilometers straight to the northwest, before it bends to west-northwest after the confluence of the Burwell Lodes , only to turn again to the northwest shortly before its confluence with the River Cam , southwest of the village of Upware .

On its course, the Reach Lode accommodates several drainage channels as well as the Burwell Lode and the Wicken Lode .

history

The origin of the Reach Lodes probably goes back to Roman times. In addition to transporting goods, it was also used for defense purposes and was an extension of the Devil's Dykes . Roman finds suggest that boat docks in Upware and Reach. At that time, mainly limestone, the so-called clunch , was transported over the Reach Lode.

When a fair , the Reach Fair , began to be held in Reach in the Middle Ages, the importance of the place and that of the Lode grew. From the Middle Ages to the late 18th century, boats transported goods from the coast to Reach across the canal. The remains of several berths and some basins have been preserved to this day. In the early 19th century, the Lode was part of a canal project that never went beyond the planning phase and which should have connected Cambridge with London . In 1821, a lock was built at Reach Lode as part of the Eau Brink Act . A few years later the Lode came into the possession of South Level Commissioners who maintained the canal. In the first half of the 20th century, the importance of the connection to the village of Reach decreased, but after the establishment of a fertilizer factory, boat traffic to Burwell increased via the Burwell Lode .

During the Second World War, only small quantities of goods were transported over the Reach Lode before commercial boat traffic came to a complete standstill in the post-war period. The Reach Lode is now used by private boats.
