Wicken Lode is an at least partially man-made and boat-navigable canal in the English county of Cambridgeshire , which is counted among the Cambridgeshire Lodes . It connects the place Wicken over the Reach Lode with the River Cam and over the Monk's Lode with the New River .
course
The approximately 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles ) long Wicken Lode arises slightly southwest of Wicken , in the north of the Wicken Fens . It first flows in a flat right curve to the southwest, before it bends a little and flows more or less straight in a south-westerly direction. Before it flows into the Reach Lode , on the southwestern edge of the Wicken Fens, it forms a few curves.
On its course, the Wicken Lode flows through the Wicken Fen and accommodates several drainage channels as well as the Monk's Lode .
history
The origin of the Wicken Lodes goes back to Roman times . The name Wicken Lode was first mentioned in 1636. Since it is relatively narrow and shallow, it was probably only used with small barges . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Wicken Lode was mainly used to transport peat from the Burwell Fen and to remove sedge . With the legal restriction of peat extraction in the 1940s, the lode also lost its importance as a trade route.
Wicken Lode is still navigable today and is maintained by the National Trust .
