Ready for the World is an American R&B , funk and dance band from Flint , Michigan , that had several pop , soul and dance hits in the mid-1980s .

biography

Ready for the World was founded by Melvin Riley and Gordon Strozier. The group originally appeared on talent shows at high schools in Flint and were discovered by radio personality The Electrifying Mojo in 1982 . The song Tonight became a regional hit in 1983, then an underground hit in Flint and Detroit . Shortly after signing a contract with MCA , the band gained national fame. The album Ready for the World was recorded in Flint, Michigan in 1984 under the direction of Bernard Terry.

The group consists of singer and keyboardist Melvin Riley, Gordon Strozier (guitar), Gregory Potts (keyboard), Willie Triplett (percussion, keyboard), John Eaton (bass guitar) and Gerald Valentine (drums). The album Ready for the World was released in 1985 and included the title Oh Sheila , which became an international success and u. a. became a number 1 hit in the US charts and number 11 in Germany. The song Digital Display followed and reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1986 the band released their second album Long Time Coming . The single Love You Down reached number 9 in the USA. The band released further albums in the 1990s, with which they could no longer build on previous successes.

After the band split in 1994, singer Riley turned to his solo career and recorded an album in the same year and 2000. Between 1995 and 2000 the band came together to produce two unsuccessful albums. A reunification album followed in 2004 with mainly urban ballads.
