Real McCoy is a German eurodance and pop music project that was internationally successful in the 90s with hits like It's On You , Another Night and Run Away .
Project history
The project arose from the collaboration between Olaf “ O-Jay ” Jeglitza, Frank “Quickmix” Hassas and Jürgen Wind (J. Wind), who had made some recordings under different names in the late 1980s. In 1989 they were commissioned to produce a cover rap version of Technotronics Pump Up the Jam for ZYX Records , and released their version under the name MC Sar & the Real McCoy (“the real McCoy” is a special English expression and is called that much like "the real thing"). The single reached number 16 in Germany. They then engaged George Shampro Mario as a rapper for public appearances and the singer Patricia Petersen and continued their success with It's on You , which reached number 11 in Germany. After It's On You, there were four more singles ( Don't Stop , Make A Move , Let's Talk About Love , No Showbo ) and an album ( On the Move ...! ), Which except for the production Don't Stop , missed their entry into the charts.
Another night
At the end of 1992 a new, exclusive contract was concluded with the Hansa company in Berlin, which resulted in the single Another Night being released in Germany in 1993 . The female vocals for Another Night were contributed by Karin Kasar, although Petersen officially remained the singer. In contrast to earlier productions, this time O-Jay's rap was not mimed by Shampro, but this time Jeglitza appeared as a rapper himself. Although Another Night only reached the top 20 in Germany, the title became very successful first in France and then in Canada. Due to the success in Canada and the associated growing airplay on US radio stations that were on the border with Canada, Another Night was also released by Arista Records in the USA. "MC Sar" was deleted from the band name, and it was only released under the name Real McCoy . Another Night became a worldwide hit, reaching number two in the UK, number three in the US and number one in Australia. It went platinum in the US and silver in the UK. The song is number 1 on the all-time list of the mainstream Top 40 charts in the USA. The title Run Away was similarly successful, reaching the top 10 again in many countries and going gold in the USA .
For this purpose, a new album was put together, which, like the first single, was called Another Night and partly consisted of titles that had previously been included on Space Invaders in Europe . In addition, the singer Vanessa Mason came to the group. Most of the album was written by Hassas, Wind and Jeglitza. Produced by Freshline (Hassas, Wind, Jeglitza), the Berman Brothers , Shep Pettibone, Lemon Productions (Adebratt, Carr & Ekman), Billy Steinberg & Rick Noweles. The album reached number 13 on the Billboard charts and was also awarded double platinum. It came in sixth in the UK and Australia.
This was followed by three more successful single releases from Another Night , then in 1996 they took another creative break. Patricia Petersen went her own way and recorded a solo single ( Money 4 Me ), she was replaced by Lisa Cork. The new album One More Time was released in 1997 and the title song entered the charts again internationally, but except for Australia, where it was again a number 3 hit, the success remained low.
Since December 1, 1999, Olaf Jeglitza has had the right to use the Real McCoy brand name . He tried again with changes in the line-up, but it was no longer possible to build on the earlier successes.
Since 2016 the formation consists of Jeglitza and the original singer Karin Kasar. Since December 19, 2016 Jürgen Wind has the right to use the original brand name MC Sar & the Real McCoy .
formation
Stylistically, Real McCoy's songs consist of a mixture of house , hi-NRG , techno , dance and pop .
The line-up changed several times. In the meantime, the following were involved in the albums and individual songs:
- Olaf "O-Jay" Jeglitza (rapper, producer)
- Frank "Quickmix" Hassas (producer)
- Jürgen Wind / J. Wind (producer)
- George Shampro Mario / MC Sar
