O-Jay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

O-Jay (born February 15, 1965 in Berlin ; actually Olaf Jeglitza ) is a German songwriter , music producer and rapper . He is also the co-founder and temporarily front man of the band Real McCoy .

biography

O-Jay was born in Berlin in 1965. After completing elementary and secondary school, he learned photography at the age of 16 at the Vocational School for Design, the Lette-Verein in Berlin. At 18 he worked as a freelance photo designer, two years later he initially became an assistant and later head of the photo department in a Berlin advertising agency.

Since 1980 O-Jay was involved in the then emerging Berlin hip-hop movement as a breakdancer and called himself The Mighty Crash . He later became a co-founder of the Imperial Nation Berlin . Together with Frank " Quickmix " Hassas, he published the first German hip-hop fanzine Freshbeat magazine in 1986 and produced the Freshline radio show . In 1988 he founded the Freshline Records label, also with Quickmix .

1983 to 1987

Already in 1983 O-Jay produced the short film Just an Illusion as part of a thesis during his training at the Lette-Verein. In the following year, 1984, there was a collaboration on another film project with the German producer and musician Jens Kuphal . An idea resulting from this collaboration to produce a first record was implemented but never published.

In 1985 O-Jay started working with the Berlin DJ Quickmix. Initially, the two gave themselves the name 2 Make Music . When they collaborated with the German producer and musician Micky Wolf shortly afterwards and the rapper The A (Aram Mouchegh) joined their team, they changed their name to Masterplan .

In 1987 their first record We Wanna Be Stars (Masterplan) was released. It was the first release by a German artist on the US hip-hop label Select Records (distributed by SPV ). Despite an extensive promotional tour in Germany, the record was not a commercial success, but it was O-Jay's entry into the music business. At the end of 1987 there was another production with Micky Wolf for the newly founded label of the Munich P1 club , in which O-Jay and Quickmix participated ( tribute ).

1988 to 1992

In 1988 Masterplan broke up and Quickmix and O-Jay founded the hip-hop electro group The Alliance . Your first production action! was released on her own label Freshline Records . In cooperation with the Berlin distributor 99 Records , they were able to sell around 20,000 units. In the same year the record was licensed to the record company ZYX Records , but a hoped-for chart entry did not materialize.

After further publications on her label, she got her first distribution deal with Rough Trade Records .

In 1989 there was a commissioned production for the label ZYX Music . They wanted a rap version of the Technotronic classic Pump Up the Jam . Quickmix and O-Jay got a studio singer and produced the title, which climbed to number 16 in the German Top 100 Singles Charts under the name MC Sar & The Real McCoy ( Pump Up the Jam - Rap ).

This first chart success resulted in a new label contract between the newly founded Freshline Records Musikproduktion GmbH and ZYX in 1990 . Quickmix and O-Jay founded Freshline GmbH together with the owner of a small Berlin studio (Jürgen Wind), where Quickmix and O-Jay had already recorded their first master plan demo. In addition to various productions, remixes and projects, other titles were published under the name MC SAR & The Real McCoy between 1990 and 1992. The follow-up It's on You made it to number 11 in the German Top 100 single charts in 1990.

Towards the end of 1992 there was a first crisis at Freshline , as the hoped-for success did not want to set in further productions. O-Jay began to work as a photographer again and to participate in other projects as a songwriter.
