Rebel of the Red Mountains is an American western from 1957. Lex Barker , who later played the role of Old Shatterhand in the Karl May films , plays the role of the Apache chief Mangas Coloradas in this film . The film was re-released by Atlas Film in 1963 as part of the Karl May wave in Germany under the title The Chief of the Apaches .

content

Apache chief Mangas rescues a Mexican-Indian girl, Riva, from danger and, because he has fallen in love with her, fights in a duel with her tribe for the right to take her with him. As gold prospectors invade the Apache reservation, the Indians can drive them away, with Luke Fargo, a white friend of the manga, helping them. This in turn is in love with Riva. As a major in an army of volunteers, Fargo can stand up for Manga's tribe against the military, who see the Apache's fight against the prospectors as an uprising and embroil them in a long war. When the Apaches are defeated, they can retreat to the mountains under his protection.

criticism

Hal Erickson attested the film to be pro-Indian, pro-tolerant and pro-feminist without falling into theory or sacrificing its entertainment for it. The TV feature film, on the other hand, saw a "moderate Karl May predecessor", including "Lex Barker in the role of Pierre Brice with Ben Johnson as the Shatterhand character".

synchronization

While Gert Günther Hoffmann lent his voice to Lex Barker in the original theatrical version , Klaus Guth can be heard in the new dubbing .
